Student-athlete nominees are selected at the conference level before being moved to compete against student-athletes from across the country for the prestigious award. The nine swimmers or divers nominated are <\/span><b>Rachael Acker<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cal-Berkley\/PAC-12), <\/span><b>Kara McCormack<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Miami\/ACC), <\/span><b>Amanda Lucia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Wagner College\/Northeast Conference), <\/span><b>Melissa Ross <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Richmond\/Atlantic 10), <\/span><b>Rebecca Matthews<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Lynn University\/Sunshine State Conference), <\/span><b>Margaret Guo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MIT\/NEWMAC), <\/span><b>Cathleen Pruden<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Mount Holyoke\/NEWMAC), <\/span><b>Clare Slagel <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Luther College\/Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference), and <\/span><b>Haley Townsend <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Kenyon\/NCAC). Record five-time Olympian and Rio-born <\/span><b>Tony Azevedo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scored three for the U.S. throughout the game, helping to seal the match with a goal with only 1:24 left to play. A few days earlier at Stanford University, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-womens-water-polo-sweeps-russia-with-16-7-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the U.S. Women\u2019s Olympic Water Polo team came out on top of a three game series against Russia, winning their final match 16-7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Team USA will now travel to Rio in preparation for the beginning of the Olympic Games this week, where the men will open play on August 6 against defending Olympic champions Croatia. The U.S. women will open play on August 9 against Spain. British and New Zealand athletes were also present, and noted that work was being done on the rooms to improve the conditions. While the Aussies eventually moved in, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-village-housing-problems-persist-the-as-games-creep-closer\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work has been going on around the clock to make the rooms suitable for habitation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as problems continued to persist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/no-smoke-alarms-in-olympic-village-fire-forces-aussies-out\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including a fire that forced more than 100 Australian athletes to evacuate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Allegations of a state-wide doping program across Russia intensified following the release of the McLaren Report, leading the IOC to release a set of guidelines for all athletes to meet in order to be eligible to compete.
