TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, June 10. ALABAMA sprinter Kevin Greer has been named to the ESPN The Magazine\/CoSIDA Academic All-American Men's At-Large First Team, marking the fourth time in the past five years that a member of the Alabama Swimming and Diving team has earned the prestigious honor.<\/p>\n
"We're obviously very proud of KG and all that he has accomplished here at Alabama," Crimson Tide head coach Eric McIlquham said. "Kevin got the absolute most out of his athletic and academic career and he is a tremendous representative of our program."<\/p>\n
Greer was one of the just two swimmers on the 2009 Academic All-American At-Large First Team, which is comprised of 15 student-athletes from across the country. The at-large team is drawn from 12 NCAA men's sports, including swimming and diving, golf, gymnastics, wrestling and hockey among others.<\/p>\n
Greer is the latest member of the Alabama swimming and diving team to earn Academic All-American honors, joining Vlad Polyakov (2007, 2006, 2005), Apostolis Tsagkarakis (2007), Guido Arroyo (2006) and Stewart Smith (2005). The Tide's Austin Shirey was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 At-Large team last year. <\/p>\n
"The success we continue to enjoy in the Academic All-American program speaks volumes to the emphasis that Alabama Swimming and Diving puts on being successful in all areas of the collegiate experience," McIlquham said. <\/p>\n
Greer, who became the fourth member of the Tide's swimming and diving team to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship earlier this year, holds a 4.0 grade point average for his collegiate career and will graduate with honors in May with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics. He will attend the University of Alabama School of Medicine starting this fall. <\/p>\n
A 2008 Senior National Qualifier and Alabama's top 50 freestyler as a junior and senior, the Sylacauga, Ala. native is ranked ninth all-time for the Tide in the 50 freestyle after posting a career-best time of 20.30 at the 2009 Southeastern Conference Championships. <\/p>\n
A four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree, he has also earned the Crimson Tide's Bob Dimick Most Scholastic Award three times. He was named the 2008 Outstanding Organic Chemistry Undergraduate and has been inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, Golden Key, NSCS, Phi Eta Sigma, and Sigma Alpha Lambda Honor Societies. He was also named to the 2008 and 2009 SEC Community Service Team.<\/p>\n
