While much of the world has been\u00a0focused on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-releases-conditions-for-russian-participation-in-rio-olympics-avoids-full-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\">doping issues<\/a>, for athletes already in Rio, housing is a more immediate concern.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has made alternative plans for its athletes, after discovering less than satisfactory conditions in the Olympic Village. According to\u00a0<strong>Kitty Chiller\u00a0<\/strong>of the AOC, the athlete housing has &#8220;blocked toilets, leaking pipes and exposed wiring.&#8221;\u00a0There are additional safety concerns as lighting in the stairwells is poor and floors are dirty.<\/p>\n<p>Athletes from New Zealand and Britain who were also already in the Village encountered similar problems.<\/p>\n<p>To test the housing to see if it would withstand full occupation, the AOC conducted a &#8220;stress test.&#8221; When multiple lights were turned on and multiple toilets were flushed,\u00a0\u201cWater came down walls, there was a strong smell of gas in some apartments, and there was shorting in electrical wiring,\u201d according to Chiller.<\/p>\n<p>British spokesman\u00a0<strong>Scott Field\u00a0<\/strong>reported that while there are difficulties, work was being done to overcome those.<\/p>\n<p>A few hundred athletes are calling the Village home after it opened this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Read more from\u00a0<em>The New York Times\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/25\/sports\/olympics\/rio-olympic-village-australia.html?smid=fb-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur&amp;referer=http%3A%2F%2Fm.facebook.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Less than two weeks from the start of the Olympic Games, more issues are coming to the surface\u00a0in Rio.
