Ryan Murphy<\/strong> qualified for his first Olympic team by clenching victories in both the 100m and 200m backstroke at US Olympic Trials<\/a>. With a wealth of international experience, he is set to continue the United States men’s backstroke legacy in Rio.<\/p>\n

Here are some fun facts to get to know the Florida native and Cal-Berkeley star:<\/p>\n

1. He’s no stranger to record-breaking.<\/h2>\n

In his time at the Bolles School, Murphy broke 26 National Age Group records. He’s also the current NCAA record holder<\/a> in the 100 and 200 back. In Rio, the bar will be even higher. But given his best time<\/a>\u00a0in the 100 back is less than three tenths away from Aaron Peirsol<\/strong>‘s world record (51.94), we think Murphy has a few records yet to pocket.<\/p>\n

2. Making the Olympic Team was an early birthday present.<\/h2>\n

Murphy turned 21 on July 2, just one day after qualifying for the Olympics in his second event, reminding us all just how young he still is. He\u00a0certainly has years of greatness ahead of him.<\/p>\n

3. He’s not the only swimmer in his family.<\/h2>\n

Ryan’s brother,\u00a0Patrick Murphy,<\/strong> swam for Notre Dame until 2015.\u00a0Patrick attributes much of his success to racing his brother through the years and both brothers have\u00a0inspired each other<\/a>. Their sister, Shannon<\/strong>, swam summer league with them growing up, as well.<\/p>\n

4. He has a great track record as a rookie.<\/h2>\n

Murphy was named the 2014\u00a0PAC-12 Newcomer of the Year\u00a0after his freshman season at Cal. As an Olympic rookie, he enters Rio with the second fastest times in the world this year in\u00a0both the 100<\/a> and 200 backstroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

United States men are known for excellence in the backstroke events and Murphy is likely to add to that legacy during his first Olympics.
