Cierra Runge<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>punched her ticket to Rio in the women’s 200 free at the 2016 Olympic Trials.\u00a0After finishing fifth in 1:57.16, the first-time Olympian will represent USA as a member of the 800 free relay.<\/p>\n

Here are five things to know about this\u00a0Olympic rookie…<\/p>\n

1. She spent last year training in Arizona.<\/h2>\n

After completing her freshman year, Runge\u00a0decided to leave Cal and head to Arizona to train\u00a0under her NBAC coach\u00a0Bob Bowman<\/strong>\u00a0at Arizona State.\u00a0<\/strong>There, she\u00a0trained with\u00a0Allison Schmitt\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Michael Phelps,\u00a0<\/strong>both whom are also on Team USA and were her former NBAC teammates.<\/p>\n

2. She’ll be a Wisconsin Badger in the fall.<\/h2>\n

Runge will head north to Wisconsin after Rio\u00a0to complete her collegiate career, where she’ll enter as a redshirt sophomore. Wisconsin’s distance\u00a0coach,\u00a0Chris Collier,\u00a0<\/strong>was Runge’s coach prior to Bowman. She’s the first Badger women’s swimmer to make an Olympic team since\u00a0Carly Piper\u00a0<\/strong>in 2004. Ironically, Piper also finished 5th in the 200 freestyle and competed on the 4×200 free relay.<\/p>\n

3. She has international experience.<\/h2>\n

The Olympics will not be her first international racing experience; Runge was a member of the winning 4×200 free relay at the 2015 World Championships<\/a>, where she also placed ninth in the 400 free. At Pan Pacs in 2014, Runge took second in the 400 free, fifth in the 800, and fourth in the 1500.<\/p>\n

4. She’s an American record holder.<\/h2>\n

During her freshman year at Cal, she\u00a0led off the 800 free relay team that broke the NCAA and American record at the Pac-12 Championships.\u00a0The relay team of Runge,\u00a0Elizabeth Pelton, Caroline Piehl,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Missy Franklin\u00a0<\/strong>broke the record by over two seconds. Franklin will also\u00a0represent Team USA with Runge in Rio.<\/p>\n

5. She comes from an athletic family.<\/h2>\n

Athleticism runs in the Runge family. Her father,\u00a0Scott,<\/strong>\u00a0played soccer at West Chester University and her brother,\u00a0Taylor,<\/strong> played baseball at Bucknell University. Younger sister Madison was also an Olympic Trials qualifier for the 800 freestyle. Just after the Trials concluded in Omaha Madison was inducted into and will swim for the United States Naval Academy.<\/p>\n

Runge grew up in\u00a0Cochranville, Pennsylvania.\u00a0Becoming\u00a0an Olympian has been a dream of hers\u00a0since she was 4 years old.<\/p>\n
