Commentary by John Leonard, ASCA, WSCA<\/em><\/p>\n

Back around 1984, my friend John Collins<\/strong> from Badger in Larchmont, NY,\u00a0came up to me on deck at Olympic Trials and said \u201cThe Drama is About to Unfold.\u201d Hmm.<\/p>\n

He went on to describe that at each trials there are \u201cstory lines\u201d that emerge from\u00a0the events\u2026.’will so and so make the team?’ ‘Will this athlete get to compete again\u00a0in their best event?’ ‘Is this \u201cthe end\u201d for the athletic career of a particular person?’\u00a0We\u2019d both been going to Trials events since 1972, and agreed there is \u201cnothing\u00a0else like it.\u201d That\u2019s still true today.<\/p>\n

In Omaha in 2016, there was the story of Missy Franklin<\/strong>, our golden girl star\u00a0from London, on top of the world. The ever smiling, ever professional, sparkling\u00a0personality that inspires children all over the world. A truly delightful human\u00a0being\u2026..regardless of how she is swimming.<\/p>\n

And her last couple of years had been beset with injury and difficulty. She\u00a0came to Omaha in June with a great, rebuilt, ready to swim body. Marvelous job\u00a0of getting ready by her, and by her coach Todd Schmitz<\/strong> and her support team.<\/p>\n

And then, in her first couple of events, she struggled. And we began to wonder,\u00a0\u201cis it possible that poor Missy MIGHT NOT be on the team to Rio?\u201d<\/p>\n

Missy created my most memorable moment of Trials. In the semi-finals of the\u00a0100 back, she had what can charitably be called a less than stellar swim. You\u00a0would expect some unhappiness on her part. That would be fair.<\/p>\n

As I sat ten feet away from her, Missy got out of the pool, walked behind the\u00a0blocks\u2026.AND CHEERED FOR THE TOP TWO SEEDS IN THE OTHER SEMI-FINAL! She\u00a0yelled loudly and repeatedly, \u201cLet\u2019s GO ______and _________! Let\u2019s Go _______X\u00a02 (since they both had the same first name).<\/p>\n

INSTANT TEARS from me. Right in front of my eyes, the meaning of sport, the\u00a0meaning of life, what we all coach for all the years\u2026..an ATHLETE, (yes, in her\u00a0case, all caps.) who understands that sport is about competing with your friends\u00a0AT THEIR BEST! And being happy for them when they do well, and HOPING they\u00a0will do well, so it will take your best performance to come out on top.<\/p>\n

Missy, I am so grateful. THANK YOU. My faith in what our sport teaches and\u00a0you demonstrate, fully on display. May all our young athletes learn from your\u00a0example. I have already told my own team about it, and you, and will tell as many\u00a0coaches as I can at clinics about this marvelous moment that you created.<\/p>\n
