In\u00a0a\u00a0New York Times <\/em>article<\/a>\u00a0published today, U.S. Olympian\u00a0Kathleen Baker\u00a0<\/strong>revealed that she suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic gastrointestinal inflammation.<\/p>\n

Baker explained to\u00a0the\u00a0Times’\u00a0<\/em>Karen Crouse\u00a0<\/strong>the issues that led to her diagnosis seven years ago and the physical and emotional toll the disease took on her and her family.<\/p>\n

Baker found out she had\u00a0Crohn’s disease after being sent for a colonoscopy after feeling ill and fatigued.<\/p>\n

\n

She learned of her diagnosis by accident. Feeling too ill to sit in class, Baker had sought refuge in the office of her father, then the head of the lower school at Forsyth Country Day, where she was a student.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is so bad, one of the worst stories ever,\u201d she said. \u201cI was on his email and an email popped up from my pediatrician saying the diagnosis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Through it all, Baker kept swimming\u2014and improving\u2014despite battles with her parents and doctors over managing her training workload.<\/p>\n

Baker made her first senior National team in 2014 and then qualified for the 100 back final at the World Championships last year. After completing her freshman year at Cal-Berkeley, Baker made the Olympic team with a second-place finish in the 100 back at Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n

But even as she embarks on her Olympic journey, she still has to be careful to manage the medical side of things.<\/p>\n

\n

Baker\u2019s experience on other international trips has made her adept at filling out the medical forms required by the World Anti-Doping Agency and packing her medical kit, including syringes and extra dosages of her medicine in case of emergency. The super bacteria in the waters off Rio do not worry her; Baker knows from gastrointestinal disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
