LAKE FOREST, California, May 25. THE final day of Fisher Cup ended in excitement as Stanford downed New York Athletic Club 9-8 in a back and forth contest to claim the title. In national team action USA White defeated Canada 10-6 while USA Blue downed USA Red 12-3.<\/p>\n
Stanford fought through the open tournament defeating Santa Barbara, LA Water Polo, and the Newport Water Polo Foundation all in games decided by two or less goals. The New York Athletic Club rolled through the early rounds of the tourney downing Northwood, Newport B, and the Olympic Club to enter the title match. A tense match throughout saw NYAC lead most of the contest, before Stanford would claim a late lead and hang on for the win. <\/p>\n
It was a big day for the Wigo twins as Drac and Janson combined for six goals. Jacob Smith added the other three while Jimmie Sandman was clutch in net for the Cardinal. Jacob Smith's brother Jesse led NYAC with three goals while the Wigo twin's big brother Wolf chipped in a goal for the Athletic Club as well. In the third place match Newport jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead before hanging on to down Olympic Club 10-8.<\/p>\n
Merrill Moses of New York Athletic Club was named top goalkeeper, Drac Wigo of Stanford was named Most Outstanding Player, and Kevin Witt was the tourney's leading goal scorer.<\/p>\n
In national team action USA White jumped on top of Canada and never looked back opening up a 2-1 lead after the first and then leading 6-1 at halftime. Thanks to two second quarter scores by Ben Hohl this one never seemed in doubt for USA White. In the third quarter it was more of the same as they led 9-3 and closed out the fourth with another goal to come away four goal winners. Jimmie Sandman put aside six saves in the win.<\/p>\n
In the second national team game USA Blue was never in doubt against USA Red. They opened up a 3-0 lead after the first and led 5-2 at halftime. JW Krumpholz and John Mann were dominant at the center spot scoring two goals apiece. Thomas Hopkins added two scores of his own as USA Blue led 8-2 after the third and cruised to the 12-3 win. Merrill Moses put aside 13 saves in the win while his counterpart Andy Stevens performed admirably posting eight saves. <\/p>\n
