KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, May 23. UNIVERSITY of Tennessee swimmer Sarah McCall and rower Libu\u0161e Bruncv\u00edkova' were named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV At-Large Team on Thursday. The pair of student-athletes earned second team honors after demonstrating success both in their sports and in the classroom.<\/p>\n
McCall, a senior and Knoxville native, graduated earlier this month with a bachelor's degree in audiology and speech pathology after earning a 3.95 grade point average. A four-time Academic All-SEC selection, McCall ranks among the program's top 10 in the 400y IM, 100y breast and 200y breast, with her IM time ranking third in UT history.<\/p>\n
McCall collected seven top-three finishes in 2009, including a second-place showing against No. 1 Georgia in the 200y breast, earning an NCAA provisional cut. The senior also reached the consolation finals in the 200y breast and 400y IM at the 2009 SEC Championships. She scored points for the Lady Vols in the same events at last year's conference championships as well.<\/p>\n
Hailing from Litoměřice, Czech Republic, Bruncv\u00edkova' earned her first selection to the all-district team after achieving a 3.93 grade point average as a business major. The sophomore has spent the entirety of her short career in the Lady Vols' top shell, helping the crew collect its highest ranking in program history after topping No. 4 Princeton last year. An SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll selection in 2008, Bruncv\u00edkova' was also one of three Lady Vols to earn Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association All-South Region honors. <\/p>\n
Bruncv\u00edkova' guided the Orange and White to 19 medals during the fall season, leading the way with seven medals of her own during the head race schedule. This spring, Bruncv\u00edkova' and the varsity eight earned 13 victories, taking the C final at last weekend's Aramark Sprints, where it recorded the sixth fastest prelim time among 20 shells. <\/p>\n
To be eligible for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better on a 4.0 scale, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing.<\/p>\n
