{"id":212159,"date":"2016-07-12T09:37:50","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=212159"},"modified":"2016-07-12T09:37:51","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T16:37:51","slug":"yuliya-efimova-cleared-to-compete-at-rio-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/yuliya-efimova-cleared-to-compete-at-rio-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Yuliya Efimova Cleared to Compete at Rio Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Yuliya Efimova<\/strong> will compete at this summer&#8217;s Olympic Games in Rio, the Russian News Agency TASS <a href=\"http:\/\/tass.ru\/en\/sport\/887791\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Sergei Kolmogorov, the head coach of the Russian Olympic team, confirmed to TASS that FINA approved Efimova for the Olympic Games almost two months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-reportedly-lifts-yuliya-efimovas-provisional-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\">lifting her provisional suspension<\/a> for testing positive\u00a0for meldonium on May 22.<\/p>\n<p>Efimova had been included on Russia&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/yuliya-efimova-listed-russias-olympic-roster\/\" target=\"_blank\">Olympic team roster<\/a> pending FINA&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yulia will join the national team in Brazil on August 1. For the moment, she is training according to an individual plan,&#8221; Kolmogorov told TASS. &#8220;FINA\u2019s decision was awaited and is not surprising. We expected that and it happened.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Efimova has not been the only top\u00a0Russian athlete to test positive in recent months for meldonium, which was added to the list of banned substances on January 1, 2016. Tennis star\u00a0<strong>Maria Sharapova\u00a0<\/strong>tested positive for the same drug at the Australian Open in January and is currently appealing a two-year suspension.<\/p>\n<p>However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has allowed for a <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Sports\/wireStory\/grace-period-meldonium-cases-extended-sept-30-40369371\" target=\"_blank\">grace period<\/a> (running through Sept. 30) for meldonium to clear out of athletes&#8217; systems, provided they ingested the drug prior to January 1. That did not apply to Sharapova, who admitted taking meldonium at a later date.<\/p>\n<p>Russia has come under fire in recent months for allegations of doping violations across all sports. In May, the\u00a0<em>New York Times<\/em> published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/former-moscow-lab-director-confirms-urine-tampering-and-systematic-doping\/\" target=\"_blank\">detailed report<\/a> on how Russian athletes skirted anti-doping procedures at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014, and in June, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2016\/jun\/17\/russia-rio-olympics-ban-doping-iaaf-sebastian-coe\" target=\"_blank\">banned track and field athletes<\/a> from competing under the Russian flag in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>Efimova will now enter the Olympics as the reigning World Champion in the 100 breast and also a medal contender in the 200 breast.
