My dad borrowed a suit from a friend that was a few sizes too large for me and we hopped into the hotel pool. From there my parents went on to put me through beginning and then more technical lessons. They never put me in floaties: they wanted me to be self-sufficient in the water.<\/p>\n<p>Many children are not as fortunate as I was, and am. They may not have the resources to learn to swim, or their parents may never have thought it a necessary skill. There are increasingly more opportunities, as well as reasons, to learn to swim now. Less than two decades before he earned a gold medal in 2008, Jones almost died from drowning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I almost drowned at the age of five at an amusement park and I was fully supervised with my parents,\u201d he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/cullen-jones-drowning-frowning-swimming-winning-n408536\" target=\"_blank\">told NBC news<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this is not such a rare occurrence. There were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/homeandrecreationalsafety\/water-safety\/waterinjuries-factsheet.html\" target=\"_blank\">an average of 3,536 fatal unintentional drownings<\/a> each year between 2005 and 2014. About <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/homeandrecreationalsafety\/water-safety\/waterinjuries-factsheet.html\" target=\"_blank\">one in five<\/a> victims of drowning are 14 years old or younger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The drownings that are happening all over the U.S. &#8212; and there are so many things that go on in the U.S. that we don&#8217;t have a solution for,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/cullen-jones-drowning-frowning-swimming-winning-n408536\" target=\"_blank\">Jones explained<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cBut for drowning there is a solution and it&#8217;s swim lessons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Mary O&#8217;Donoghue<\/b>, the Aquatics Director of the YMCA of Greater New York, fully agrees with this mentality. \u201cLearning to swim is an ongoing message at the YMCA,\u201d she told me over the phone. &#8220;Our goal is to teach comfort around the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Don&#8217;t Put it Off<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_212087\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-212087\" data-attachment-id=\"212087\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/why-no-one-should-pass-up-swim-lessons\/swim-lessons-4\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/swim-lessons.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1200,799\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;2.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;U.S. Army&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;NIKON D3S&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Swim instructor Jessica Raya assists Derek Muniz, 4, as he works on using his hands and feet at the same time during a class Monday at Thomas Pool. (Photo by Daniel Cernero, Fort Hood Sentinel Sports Editor)\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-212087\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: 1 Windows<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Getting over initial misgivings or fears is the hardest part, sometimes. \u201cSome people may be scared to start swimming due to an experience from childhood, or parents unknowingly instilling fear in them by telling them all the things to avoid doing,\u201d O&#8217;Donoghue said.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, USA Swimming discovered that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/cullen-jones-drowning-frowning-swimming-winning-n408536\" target=\"_blank\">only 13 percent<\/a> of children who come from a non-swimming household will ever learn to swim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want them to get over their sense of apprehension so we can get more people in the water so they know what\u2019s good and what\u2019s fun, and how you can become better,\u201d O\u2019Donoghue added. \u201cWe are open to including everyone and at least allow them the opportunity to try. Since its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/cullen-jones-drowning-frowning-swimming-winning-n408536\" target=\"_blank\">introduction in June of 2015<\/a>, \u201cMake a Splash has provided swim lessons for more than 3.3 million children nationwide and granted more than $3.6 million for free and reduced-cost swim lessons to date.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Programs such as Make a Splash and Teach New York City to Swim are essential to keeping children safe. Especially in the summer, when everyone wants to cool off, it helps everyone relax knowing your children are safe playing around a pool or any body of water.<\/p>\n<h3>Go! My response is always, \u201cwell, as long as you can swim that\u2019s all that matters.\u201d While it is important for children to feel comfortable in the water, it is never too late to begin learning to swim.<\/p>\n<p>Just being aware of your limits and knowing how to remain \u201dwater safe\u201d is a very important thing. Additionally, \u201cOne thing I would add is the best form of prevention against drowning is close supervision, enjoying water where there\u2019s a lifeguard, and making sure your child gets a break,\u201d O\u2019Donoghue said. \u201cEven if they can swim fairly well, after two or more hours of playing, they can get tired. Keep cool, take a swim lessons and learn how to enjoy the water safely.\u201d Because who knows?
