FINA, the International Governing Body of aquatic sport, in conjunction with the the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Committee\u00a0has begun to\u00a0release of the names of athletes competing in each of the 2016 Rio Olympic Aquatic Sports. Aquatic sports included in the Olympic Games include:\u00a0marathon (open water) swimming, synchronized swimming, diving, water polo, and swimming.<\/p>\n

Note: Swimming World will\u00a0continuously update the following page with Olympic information about the aquatic event and a list of the international athletes competing in their respective aquatic events. Links will also be included.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Sport:<\/strong> Marathon Swimming<\/p>\n

Event:<\/strong>\u00a010k Marathon Swimming for men and women<\/p>\n

Competition Dates<\/strong>: August 15-16, 2016<\/p>\n

Olympic Venue<\/strong>: Copacabana Beach, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro<\/p>\n

Number of athletes<\/strong>: 50 (25 men, 25 women)<\/p>\n

Maximum number of athletes per country<\/strong>: 4 (2 men and 2 women)<\/p>\n

Competition Format:<\/strong>\u00a0Over the course of\u00a0two consecutive days, the men\u2019s and women\u2019s races will take place just off the coast of the Copacabana Beach.\u00a0Each competition will include\u00a0four loops of 2.5km each, for a total 10km race. It is expected that the an average duration of\u00a0each race will be two hours.<\/p>\n

Qualification<\/strong>: Athletes qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics based on their results in either the FINA World Championships 2015, or FINA Olympic Marathon Swim Qualifier (June 11-12, 2016 in Setubal, POR)<\/p>\n

Olympic Venue<\/strong>: Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, with a 6,500 seat capacity<\/p>\n

Number of athletes<\/strong>: 136<\/p>\n

Maximum number of athletes per country<\/strong>: 16 (8 men, 8 women)<\/p>\n

Competition format<\/strong>: In individual events \u2013 up to 34 divers (maximum 2 divers per country), with preliminaries, semi-final (best 18) and final (best 12); in synchro events \u2013 8 teams (maximum one team per country), direct final<\/p>\n

Qualification<\/strong>: Athletes qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics based on their results in the FINA World Championships Kazan 2015, FINA Diving World Cup Rio 2016, or Continental Championships<\/p>\n

\nSport:<\/strong> Water Polo<\/p>\n

Events<\/strong>: Men’s (12 teams) and women’s (8 teams) tournaments<\/p>\n

Dates<\/strong>: August 6-20, 2016<\/p>\n

Olympic Venue<\/strong>: The first week, the tournaments will be held at the newly-remodeled Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre (which holds a capacity of 6,500). The second week, the tournaments will be held at the Aquatics Stadium (which hold a capacity of 14,000).<\/p>\n

Number of athletes<\/strong>: 260 (156 men, 104 women)<\/p>\n

Maximum number of athletes per country<\/strong>: 26 (13 men and 13 women)<\/p>\n

Competition format<\/strong>: Men: The 12 teams competing teams are divided into two groups of 6. Days 1-5 consist of the preliminary rounds. Day 6 is the quarter-final round, day 7 is the semi-final round, with the final round on day 8.<\/p>\n

Women: The 8 teams competing are divided in two groups of 4. Days 1-3 consist of the preliminary rounds. Day 4 is the quarter-final round, day 5 is semi-final round, with the final round on day 6. (Note: the men’s and women’s tournament days will alternate.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Qualification pathway<\/strong>: Athletes qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games based on the following results: (Men) Qualification\u00a0based on placing in the 2015 FINA World League, 2015 FINA World Championships, Continental Championships\/Host Country or the Olympic Games Qualification Tournament. (Women) Qualification\u00a0based on placing in the Continental Championships\/Host Country or Olympic Games Qualification Tournament.<\/p>\n
