TOM Shields, a <i>Swimming World<\/i> five-star prospect, crushed the national high school record in the men&#39;s 200-yard free today at the CIF Division I prelims.<\/p>\n<p>Shields, who is headed to the University of California, clocked a remarkable 1:33.83 while representing Edison High.<\/p>\n<p>Not only did that time smash the public school record of 1:35.55 set by Eric Diehl back in 1991 while representing Mission Viejo, the effort also beat the overall record of 1:34.96 set by Joe Hudepohl.  Hudepohl clocked the time in 1991 while swimming for St. Xavier in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>Diehl&#39;s record was one of the oldest on the public high school books, leaving Jeff Kostoff&#39;s legendary 500-yard free time of 4:16.39 from 1983 as the longest-standing record.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was going for it but not by that much,&quot; Shields told <b>OCVarsity.com<\/b>. &quot;I never thought I could go that fast this year.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><i>Special thanks to OC Varsity&#39;s Dan Albano for contributing to this report.
