That list includes 21 women and 10 men that own 39 world records (both short course and long course), and 39 Paralympic medals. Among that roster is 12-time paralympic medalist <\/span><b>Jessica Long, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who will be representing the United States in her fourth Paralympic Games along with teammates<\/span><b> Rudy Garcia-Tolson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>Cody Bureau. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That trio has represented the U.S. at the 2004, 2008, 2012, and now the 2016 Paralympics. Over 400 athletes competed at the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Swimming Trials, which ran from Thursday June 30 through Saturday July 2 in Greensboro, NC. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials served somewhat as a changing of the guard of the U.S. Olympic Team, with many National Team veterans falling short of qualifying for the Olympic Team. Notable of those were the list of reigning Olympic gold medalists from the 2012 Games in London who won\u2019t be in Rio to defend their titles. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/video-interview-tyler-clary-walks-away-with-his-head-held-high\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Tyler Clary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(200 backstroke)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ryan-murphy-david-plummer-lead-tight-100-back-field-punch-tickets-to-rio\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Matt Grevers <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(100 backstroke)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not defend their respective backstroke titles in Rio after both finishing third in their events in Omaha. And while <\/span><b>Ryan Lochte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Missy Franklin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are both members of the U.S. Olympic contingent going to Rio, neither qualified individually in events where they mined gold in 2012 (<\/span><b>Lochte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chase-kalisz-and-jay-litherland-claim-first-olympic-berths-at-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 400 IM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Franklin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olivia-smoliga-smokes-100-back-final-moves-to-fourth-in-world\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 100 backstroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, 2012 Trials Champions <\/span><b>Breeja Larson, Jessica Hardy, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Caitlin Leverenz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished outside of qualifying for Rio. <\/span><b>Natalie Coughlin <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/natalie-coughlin-pulls-out-of-50-free-at-olympic-trials-not-retiring\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missed out on what would have been her fourth Olympic Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after finishing 8th in the 100 backstroke and failing to advance out of the semi-final of the 100 freestyle. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many veteran fell short of making the Olympic Team, 31-year old <\/span><b>Michael Phelps <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/210191-2\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was able to qualify for a record fifth straight Olympic Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That sets a record among American male swimmers for the most Olympics qualified for, and ties with <\/span><b>Dara Torres\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 Olympic Games appearances<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">among all swimmers. Swimming in what was a more limited schedule than usual for the Greatest Olympian of All-Time, <\/span><b>Phelps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">officially made his fifth team in his pet event, the 200 butterfly. With his new son Boomer in the crowd with fiance <\/span><b>Nicole Johnson <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and mother <\/span><b>Debbie, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-phelps-makes-5th-olympics-tom-shields-takes-other-200-fly-spot\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the world record holder posted a time of 1:54.84 to win the event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Out fast in 53.07 (only .29 off his world record pace of 52.88), <\/span><b>Phelps <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell off the pace a bit in the second 100 to finish well outside of his world record time. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials is known as the meet where anything can happen, this year\u2019s meet was one of the most thrilling in recent history. Over half of the possible event titles went to first time Olympians, with a healthy share of second place qualifiers also making their first Olympic Team. The first indication came in the very first event of the meet, where <\/span><b>Chase Kalisz <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Jay Litherland <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chase-kalisz-and-jay-litherland-claim-first-olympic-berths-at-trials\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touched 1-2 to qualify for their first Olympic Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and lock out defending champion <\/span><b>Ryan Lochte. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As stated above, time and time again the meet saw new stars bar defending Olympic champions or previous Trials champions from qualifying, giving the U.S. Olympic Team 29 first-time Olympians when all was said and done. Competing in the Australian Grand Prix as part of the Rio Farewell Tour, the Aussie sprint superstar clipped <\/span><b>Britta Steffen\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 world record by .01 to record the fastest 100-meter freestyle in history. Going out in 24.87 to her feet, the 24 year old touched in 52.06 to clip <\/span><b>Steffen\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record of 52.07 from the 2009 World Championships in Rome. <\/span><b>Campbell\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-and-bronte-campbell-emma-mckeon-post-3-of-worlds-top-4-100-freestyles\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">season best had been a 52.38 from the Aussie Olympic Trials back in April<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was just a hair over her previous lifetime best. She also won the 50 freestyle earlier in the meet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-drops-24-04-50-freestyle-as-six-meet-records-fall-at-australia-grand-prix\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hitting the wall in 24.04<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, roughly two-tenths of a second off her world leading time in that event. Already considered a favorite in the 100 freestyle, this swim confirms Australia\u2019s dominance in the freestyle sprints and makes an even stronger case for them being favorites in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. <\/span><b>Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is joined by her sister <\/span><b>Bronte <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(52.58) and <\/span><b>Emma McKeon <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(52.80) in the under-53 club.
