RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 9. THE oldest record in the Brazilian books fell in the men's 800 free during long course meter morning finals at the Maria Lenk Trophy held in Rio de Janeiro. <\/p>\n
The 7:59.85 South American record set by Djan Madruga in Austin, Texas way back in 1980 finally came off the books. Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca did the honors with a 7:58.20 in the distance freestyle event. Conrado Chedi placed second in 7:59.98, while Matheus Ribeiro took third in 8:02.98.<\/p>\n
Joanna Maranhao posted a South American record in the women's 200 fly with a 2:09.48 readout. That swim cleared her continental standard of 2:10.45 set in April 2008. Daiene Days touched second in 2:11.75, while Monique Ferreira rounded out the podium in 2:12.13.<\/p>\n
Kristel Kobrich followed in the women's 1500 free by crushing the South American record. Kobrich clocked a 16:11.40 in the metric mile to destroy her continental mark of 16:22.18 set at the 2007 World Championships in Melbourne. Poliana Okimoto took second in 16:35.62, while Ana Marcela Cunha finished third in 16:56.76.<\/p>\n
Tatiane Sakemi opened the morning finals session with a winning effort of 31.29 in the women's 50 breast. That time came up short of her South American record time of 30.81 set last night, but was enough to gain her victory this morning. Ana Carla Carvalho placed second in 31.44, while Alessandra Marchiori placed third in 31.76.<\/p>\n
After posting a stunning world-record time of 26.89 in the men's 50 breast last night, Felipe Silva was happy to just win the title in the morning finale with a 27.25. Joao Luiz Junior touched close behind with a second-place 27.39, while Felipe Lima completed the top three in 27.56.<\/p>\n
In the men's 200 fly, Lucas Salatta topped the finale with a time of 1:56.65. John Castro placed second in 1:57.62 with Leonardo de Deus taking third in 1:58.22.<\/p>\n
