{"id":211050,"date":"2016-07-03T05:53:40","date_gmt":"2016-07-03T12:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=211050"},"modified":"2016-07-03T05:53:40","modified_gmt":"2016-07-03T12:53:40","slug":"usa-women-complete-sweep-of-hungary-with-10-7-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/usa-women-complete-sweep-of-hungary-with-10-7-win\/","title":{"rendered":"USA Women Complete Sweep of Hungary with 10-7 Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bronx, NY &#8211; July 2 &#8211; The U.S. Olympic Women&#8217;s Water Polo Team completed a three game sweep of Hungary on the East Coast with a 10-7 win earlier today at Fordham University&#8217;s Messmore Aquatic Center.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/maggie_steffens_833878.html\" target=\"_blank\">Maggie Steffens<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Danville, CA\/Stanford\/NYAC) scored three goals to pace the offense while\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/ashleigh_johnson_906766.html\" target=\"_blank\">Ashleigh Johnson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Miami, FL\/Princeton\/NYAC) posted eight saves in net in the victory. Steffens returned fire not long after to even the match at 1-1. Hungary went up 2-1 only to see\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/kk_clark_846601.html\" target=\"_blank\">KK Clark<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Menlo Park, CA\/UCLA\/NYAC) come back with a score at the 3:17 mark to tie the game at 2-2 going to the second quarter.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA kept the offense going in the second quarter as they continued a 3-0 run to take their first lead of the afternoon on goals from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/kiley_neushul_846599.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kiley Neushul<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Goleta, CA\/Stanford\/Santa Barbara) and Steffens to go ahead 4-2 with 4:25 left in the first half. Keszthelyi broke the run with a score with <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1915637325\"><span class=\"aQJ\">1:08<\/span><\/span> left in the half to leave Team USA up 4-3 going into the break.<\/p>\n<p>Steffens came out firing in the third quarter with her third goal of the day followed by a tally from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/courtney_mathewson_833881.html\" target=\"_blank\">Courtney Mathewson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Anaheim Hills, CA\/UCLA\/NYAC) for a 6-3 advantage with <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1915637326\"><span class=\"aQJ\">5:12<\/span><\/span> to play in the period. Hungary rallied scoring three of the next five goals to keep pace in the matching trailing just 8-6 going into the final eight minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The United States closed the game in strong fashion starting with a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/maddie_musselman_901334.html\" target=\"_blank\">Maddie Musselman<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Newport Beach, CA\/Corona del Mar HS\/CdM Aquatics) power play strike with <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1915637327\"><span class=\"aQJ\">6:36<\/span><\/span> left in the match leaving Team USA up 9-6. After Hungary&#8217;s Dora Antal scored to make it 9-7,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usawaterpolo.org\/sports\/w-senior\/mtt\/kami_craig_833864.html\" target=\"_blank\">Kami Craig<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(Santa Barbara, CA\/USC\/NYAC) put a cap on the match with a goal from in close for a 10-7 with just <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1915637328\"><span class=\"aQJ\">2:31<\/span><\/span> to play.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA went 3\/11 on power plays and 2\/2 on penalty shots while Hungary went 1\/8 on power plays and 1-1 on penalty shots.<\/p>\n<p>Next up for Team USA will be a three game series with Russia starting <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1915637329\"><span class=\"aQJ\">July 21<\/span><\/span> at Cathedral Catholic.
