PHOENIX, Arizona, May 8. AWARDS for several of the most accomplished and charismatic swimming coaches in the collegiate swimming community will be among the highlights of the annual College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) convention. This year's convention will be held in Chicago, May 21-24, at the Doubletree Miracle Mile hotel and the Northwestern University School of Law.<\/p>\n
Frank Keefe, the Head Coach at Yale University is the winner of The Collegiate and Scholastic Trophy, the highest award of its kind in the United States. It is presented to an individual or organization for having contributed in an outstanding way to swimming as a competitive sport and as a healthful recreational activity at schools and colleges.<\/p>\n
Keefe, who has been the Yale head coach since 1978, has successfully built upon Yale's great swimming legacy, combining it with an emphasis on academic achievement. In 31 years, Keefe's Bulldogs have won more than 400 dual meets, with a winning percentage just under .700, while at the same time, placing at or near the top almost every year in the Academic All-American rankings.<\/p>\n
The Richard E. Steadman award will go to Peter J. Accardy, the retired former head coach at California State University, Northridge. The Richard E. Steadman award is conferred annually to a swimming or diving coach in the high school, club, or university ranks who, in the opinion of the CSCAA, has done the most to spread happiness in Coach Steadman's beloved sport of swimming and diving.<\/p>\n
From the mid-19702 to mid-80s, Accardy's Northridge teams dominated Division II. His men won nine NCAA team crowns, including five in a row from 1981-85, while his women took four Division II titles, giving Accardy a record 13 national team titles.<\/p>\n
The first-ever Speedo\/CSCAA Lifetime Achievement Award will be conferred upon Richard Quick, Auburn University Head Coach, whose teams have won a record 13 NCAA Division I ream titles. The award is for "the individual whose efforts best exemplify the integrity and ideals of collegiate swimming and who has achieved significant success in the sport while imparting the educational and character-building qualities of the collegiate swimming experience."<\/p>\n
Sue Peterson Lubow, Athletic Director at the US Merchant Marine Academy and swimming's longest-serving secretary \u2013 rules editor, will receive the Daktronics\/CSCAA Ben Franklin Award: This award recognizes "the individual (or organization) whose efforts best promote the integrity and enhancement of the student-athlete ideal."<\/p>\n
