AUBURN, Alabama, May 5. BRETT Hawke, who has served as an assistant swimming coach at Auburn for the past three seasons, has been named co-head coach of the men's and women's programs, announced Athletics Director Jay Jacobs Tuesday. Hawke will oversee all day-to-day operations of both programs in consultation with head coach Richard Quick.<\/p>\n
Hawke has overseen the men's program since Quick was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in December 2008, helping lead the team to the 2009 NCAA Championship as well as the Southeastern Conference title.<\/p>\n
"I'm really excited for the opportunity to work with Richard and help continue the championship tradition of both men's and women's programs here at Auburn," Hawke said. "Richard has been a great resource of knowledge to me and I've learned a tremendous amount from him during the last two years.<\/p>\n
"This program has been part of my family for the past 10 years and it means a great deal for me to assume this role. Along with winning championships, I look forward to helping student-athletes reach their potential in the pool as well as academically and in life beyond their time at Auburn. I want to thank Jay Jacobs and the administration for the opportunity to help lead the program into the future."<\/p>\n
The assistant coach for the Brazilian National team at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Hawke coached former Tiger Cesar Cielo to a gold medal in the 50-meter freestyle, and also recently coached former Auburn swimmer Fred Bousquet to a world record in the same event at the French Nationals.<\/p>\n
"We are pleased to have Brett oversee the day-to-day operations of the swimming program until Richard is able to return to the pool deck," Jacobs said. "Brett has been extremely successful at every level of swimming, both competitively and as a coach. He is a proven winner and leader, and we're confident it his abilities to continue that with this program."<\/p>\n
A 17-time All-American at Auburn from 1997-99, Hawke won nine NCAA individual titles and seven SEC individual titles, while helping the program win its first NCAA team championship in 1997.<\/p>\n
A native of Sydney, Australia, Hawke was a two-time Olympian with the Australian national team.<\/p>\n
