BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, May 5. INDIANA head swimming coach Ray Looze announced today that assistant coaches Pam Swander and Mike Westphal will receive new titles and additional responsibilities within the swimming program.<\/p>\n
Swander has been promoted to assistant head coach for women's swimming. She will now be the primary point person with the women's program, a team that is coming off its second Big Ten Championship in the last three seasons. Swander is entering her fifth year at Indiana where she has been integral in the development of the Hoosiers' middle distance swimmers, as well as guiding All-American and 2008 Olympian Kate Zubkova.<\/p>\n
"Pam will now be our primary point person (coach) with the women's swimming team," Looze said. "This will give us great consistency in coaching, academic oversight, and student athlete welfare issues. I look forward to working with Coach Swander at IU for years to come."<\/p>\n
Westphal will now serve as assistant head coach for men's swimming. Like Swander, Westphal will be the primary point person for the men's team after spending the last few seasons working with the distance swimmers. Westphal is entering his seventh year at Indiana and has helped lead the men's program to a Big Ten title in 2006, as well as a top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships in 2008.<\/p>\n

"Mike and I have now coached together for 10 years and it is my honor to delegate these new responsibilities to a very fine coach. Coach Westphal will oversee, coaching, academic, and student-athlete welfare issues for our men's swimmers."<\/p>\n
