Olympian\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong>\u00a0did not swim\u00a0the 200 IM prelims this morning at Olympic Trials. Kalisz instead chose to focus on training and preparing to swim the 400 IM at the Olympics in Rio, per USA Swimming.<\/p>\n

Michael Phelps<\/strong> and\u00a0Ryan Lochte\u00a0<\/strong>are heavy favorites to represent the U.S. in the 200 IM in Rio, and the two have combined to win every World Championship and Olympic title in the event since 2003. As such, the third through sixth seeded swimmers all pulled out of the event, either by scratching or simply not showing up.<\/p>\n

But the other three are all preparing for event finals tonight, and they are aware that their chances of qualifying for Rio would be much stronger in other events. Third-seeded\u00a0Conor Dwyer<\/strong> will compete in the 100 free final tonight, hoping for a spot on the U.S. 400 free relay, while fourth and fifth seeds\u00a0Josh Prenot\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Will Licon\u00a0<\/strong>both have the 200 breast on tap. Kalisz had originally been the sixth seed.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Dwyer, like Kalisz, has already booked his spot to Rio, finishing second in both the 200 and 400 free, while neither Prenot nor Licon has done so, and tonight the pair will likely be battling for one available spot in the 200 breast behind\u00a0Kevin Cordes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
