Who would predict <\/span><b>Ryan Lochte, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the seasoned Olympic veterans and defending gold medalist in the 400 IM, would be run down in the last 25 meters by a college sophomore whose first international experience was just last summer? Finishing second behind Georgia teammate <\/span><b>Chase Kalisz, <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chase-kalisz-and-jay-litherland-claim-first-olympic-berths-at-trials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the University of Georgia swimmer touched the wall in 4:11.02 to punch his ticket to Rio de Janeiro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to represent the United States in his first Olympic Games.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of three Litherlands swimming at the University of Georgia (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/litherland-triplets-have-unique-olympic-dreams\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his brothers, <\/span><b>Mick <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Kevin, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also swim for the Bulldogs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>Litherland&#8217;s\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sole international experience is a gold medal from the 2015 World University Games in the 400 IM. While <\/span><b>Litherland\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> time isn\u2019t close to any records or vault him to the top of the world rankings (although it did move the 20 year old to fourth in the world), it nevertheless was the swim that made him an Olympian. That\u2019s why this is the most pressure-packed meet there is. It\u2019s all about who can get their hand on the wall first.
