KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 6. IN a shocking upset, the No. 6-ranked Tennessee Volunteers upended the No. 1-ranked Texas Longhorns, 121-120 in a dual meet Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.<\/p>\n
Tennessee led most of the way in the meet, taking an immediate 13-4 lead by placing first and third in the first event, the 200 yard medley relay. That lead was extended to 14 points after the second event, the 1000 yard free, where the Vols' Brett Tannhauser (9:18.53) and Steve Cromer (9:24.88) again pulled off a one-three finish. <\/p>\n
The Vols again attained a 14-point margin after Chris Hussey (20.19) and Renalto Gueraldi (20.32) went one-two in the 50. But after that, the Longhorns began inexorably to pull ever closer. <\/p>\n
After the seventh event, the Longhorns took the lead, 67-63, when Tommy Hannan won the 200 fly in 1:46.99. Texas continued to hang onto a thin margin, which ranged from 3 to 8 points. With one event to go, Texas led, 116-108. <\/p>\n
Needing to win the 200 freestyle relay and capture at least third-place as well, the Vol sprinters came through in the clutch. The foursome of Chris Hussey, Renato Gueraldi, Matt Parrish and Mike Burton won the race in a time of 1:20.20. Texas took second and the quartet of Gilliam, Justin Hoggatt, Brent Owen and Lance Asti beat the Texas B' relay to win third-place and the meet. <\/p>\n
"He was brilliant," said a jubilant Tennessee coach John Trembley of Asti's effort on the anchor leg. "It was a great anchor leg by Lance Asti, who had been struggling this weekend. I don't really know where that race came from." <\/p>\n
The opportunity to win the meet in he 200 freestyle relay came courtesy of Vol junior Brett Tannhauser, who inspired the squad with a come from behind victory in the 500 freestyle a few events earlier. The victory pulled the Vols within three points of the Longhorns just as they threatened to pull away from Tennessee. <\/p>\n
"The 500 free was the turning point of the meet," Trembley said. "On desire alone [Tannhauser] finished that race." <\/p>\n
Following the 500 freestyle, Texas began to build the lead again by winning the three-meter diving and the 200 breaststroke. <\/p>\n
However, the lead was not great enough for Texas to escape the power of the Tennessee sprint freestylers, who proved to be a powerhouse all day long. <\/p>\n
