The lab in Rio that was to be responsible for processing Olympic drug test samples has been suspended by the World Anti-Doping Agency.<\/p>\n
The suspension began\u00a0two days ago, on June 22. The lab has the ability to appeal the suspension, which was made because of “a non-conformity with the International Standard for Laboratories.”<\/p>\n
Incoming director\u00a0Olivier Niggli\u00a0<\/strong>assured that, “WADA will work closely with the Rio Laboratory to resolve the identified issue.” He also added that\u00a0athletes should be confident in how the situation will be resolved.<\/p>\n If that lab is not operational by the start of the Olympic Games in just over a month, samples would have to be flown to Switzerland.<\/p>\n Read the full statement from WADA here:<\/p>\n The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) announces that, due to a non-conformity with the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL), it has suspended the accreditation of the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory (Laborat\u00f3rio Brasileiro de Controle de Dopagem \u2013 LBCD \u2013 LADETEC \/ IQ \u2013 UFRJ) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil [Rio Laboratory].<\/p>\n The suspension, which took effect on 22 June 2016 when the Rio Laboratory was notified, prohibits the Laboratory from carrying out all anti-doping analyses on urine and blood samples. It may appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport within 21 days of receipt of notice.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the meantime, WADA will work closely with the Rio Laboratory to resolve the identified issue,\u201d said Olivier Niggli<\/strong>, Incoming Director General. \u201cThe Agency will ensure that, for the time being, samples that would have been intended for the Laboratory, will be transported securely, promptly and with a demonstrable chain of custody to another WADA-accredited laboratory worldwide,\u201d Niggli continued. \u201cThis will ensure that there are no gaps in the anti-doping sample analysis procedures; and that, the integrity of the samples is fully maintained,\u201d he continued. \u201cAthletes can have confidence that the suspension will only be lifted by WADA when the Laboratory is operating optimally; and that, the best solution will be put in place to ensure that sample analysis for the Rio Olympic and Paralympic Games is robust.\u201d<\/p>\n A Disciplinary Committee will be formed shortly and will be required to review the case, on the basis of the Procedural Rules adopted by the WADA Executive Committee. This Disciplinary Committee will issue a recommendation with respect to the Rio Laboratory\u2019s accreditation status.<\/p>\n Pursuant to the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL), WADA is responsible for accrediting and re-accrediting anti-doping laboratories; thereby, ensuring that they maintain the highest quality standards. Whenever a laboratory does not meet ISL requirements, WADA may decide to suspend or revoke the laboratory\u2019s accreditation (see Decision below).<\/p>\n Decision of the Chairman of the WADA Executive Committee<\/p>\n 1. The accreditation of the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory is provisionally suspended with immediate effect.<\/p>\n 2.
