NOVA Southeastern University athletic director Michael Mominey has announced the addition of swimming and diving for both men and women as an NCAA Division II athletic program at NSU. This will increase the number of NCAA varsity sports sponsored by the University to 17.

"We are very excited to announce the addition of an intercollegiate swimming program" Mominey said. "University president Ray Ferrero, Jr. continues to support the athletic program and our student-athletes, coaches and staff. Our main focus currently at the university is to build the undergraduate student body with emphasis on undergraduate programs that are student centered. The addition of swimming certainly is in line with this philosophy."

The men's and women's swimming/diving programs are slated to begin NCAA competition during the 2010-11 championship season. A national search will begin immediately to identify a head coach, and the 2009-10 season will be utilized for recruiting, scheduling and athlete development.

NSU men's and women's swimming/diving will compete as an NCAA Division II program and as a member of the Sunshine State Conference. Currently, 73 Division II schools offer varsity women's swimming/diving while 56 Division II member institutions offer the program to men.

Nova Southeastern becomes the fifth school in the Sunshine State Conference with a men's and women's varsity swimming/diving program joining Florida Southern, Rollins, Saint Leo and Tampa. Both programs will compete at the recently constructed $5 million NSU Aquatics Center. The 50 meter pool and dive well is the largest competition pool in the state of Florida with well over a million gallons of water. The competition pool can be set up for 50 meter or 25 yard lap swimming and also boasts two, one meter and one, three meter diving boards.

The addition of men's and women's swimming and diving at Nova Southeastern marks the third expansion for the school's athletic department since being granted full NCAA membership in 2002. NSU added women's rowing, while reinstating men's cross country and women's tennis in 2003 and later added men's and women's outdoor track in 2006.

Special thanks to Nova Southeastern for contributing this report.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 6.
