Stories of early morning workouts, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/2008\/08\/14\/michael-phelps-12000-calorie-day-diet-not-for-everyone.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12,000 calorie meal plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and tireless dedication fill our TV screens and phones, showing off to the outside world what is normally just known to us. Olympic summers lead to recognition for swimmers everywhere and an increased interest in the sport we all love. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympic summers lead to an increase of swimming involvement\u00a0all over the United States. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/DesktopDefault.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Swimming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consistently sees a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/_Rainbow\/Documents\/1a46cc4d-42fc-4231-a224-be349b090db2\/Statistics-2013.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rise in membership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> year after year, but the rise following an Olympic summer is always\u00a0much higher. Swimming\u2019s Olympic popularity has kept numbers rising drastically every year since Athens, a trend that seems to go hand in hand with the rise of Michael Phelps\u2019 Olympic medal count. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Membership increased by 7.3%, 11.3%, and 13.2% in 2005, 2009, and 2013, respectively. It makes what is usually passed over as a boring, individual sport a glowing example of camaraderie and spirit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So as you watch the U.S. Olympic Team grow these next few days, know that you are watching the sport of swimming grow as well.
