Mandatory Credit: Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-144698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Erich Schlegel\/USA Today Sports Images<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Brazil\u2019s best hopes for an Olympic medal at their home games <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-record-holder-etiene-medeiros-tests-positive-for-banned-substance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tested positive for a banned substance this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Etiene Medeiros <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was found to have traces of fenoterol, an asthma treatment drug, in her system at an out-of-competition in San Paulo. <\/span><b>Medeiros <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke on to the international scene when she captured <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/etiene-medeiros-clips-world-record-50-back-worlds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the gold medal and world record in the 50 backstroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the FINA Short Course World Championships. She also captured the silver medal in the 50 backstroke in Kazan, and was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/historic-sub-100-from-brazils-etiene-medeiros-to-break-pan-american-games-record\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first Brazilian woman to win a gold medal at the Pan Am Games last summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An open water marathon swimmer, <\/span><b>King <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completed the 36.5 mile swim in 21:19.45, making her circumnavigation the fastest in history. <\/span><b>Sean O\u2019Connell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the first person to complete the swim in 1977, when he swam around the island in 43 hours and 27 minutes. A 50-person relay group also completed the swim 10 years ago to commemorate <\/span><b>O\u2019Connell\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swim. <\/span><b>King <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">braved waves of more than two feet in addition to 12-14 knot winds in the process of completing the swim. Commenting on her swim, <\/span><b>King <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">praised her team for their role in the process: \u201cThis was a team effort. This was not my swim\u2026I cannot own it. This would not have happened without the role that each of my incredible crew played. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week the South Korean National Olympic Committee <\/span><a href=\" http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/south-korea-rejects-plea-by-park-tae-hwan-sticks-by-rio-ban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced that the ban placed on Olympic Gold Medalist <\/span><b>Park Tae-Hwan <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will stand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning he will not be added to the South Korean Olympic Roster for the 2016 Rio Olympics Games. <\/span><b>Park <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had previously been suspended for 18-months following a positive test for a banned substance before the 2014 Asian Games. Although the three-time Olympian has completed the 18-month suspension, the Korean Olympic Committee has a rule prohibiting any athlete with a positive test from competing for three years following a doping ban. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/park-tae-hwan-to-be-kept-out-of-rio-olympics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it was announced that the gold medalist would not be competing in Rio back in April<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Park <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still competed at the 2016 Korean Nationals and has been trying to overturn the ban from the KOC. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a tune up meet in Omaha just a week before U.S. Trials are set to begin, <\/span><b>Michael Andrew <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">downed the 17-18 NAG record that was previously owned by <\/span><b>Kevin Cordes. <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-downs-100-breast-nag-record-by-01-seconds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Touching in 1:00.46 in prelims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Andrew <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slipped by the record by just one-hundredth of a second. <\/span><b>Andrew <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/michael-andrew-further-lowers-100-breast-nag\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came back in finals to lower the record again to 1:00.37<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His previous best time was a 1:00.68 from 2015 Summer Nationals. This event may be the young pro\u2019s best chance at making the U.S. Olympic Team. While <\/span><b>Kevin Cordes, Andrew Wilson, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>Cody Miller <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are all major national players, the U.S. has been without a dominant player in the men\u2019s 100 breaststroke for the last few years.
