While certain weeks may be more appropriate for specific levels of swimming (club, high school, college, or masters), Drill Of The Week excerpts are meant to be flexible for your needs and inclusive for all levels of swimming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s drill is upside down underwater breaststroke. As the name suggests, this drill forces a swimmer to move through the water in a totally unnatural way, challenging them to develop their feel for their stroke. Take a look at the drill below:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Upside Down Underwater Breaststroke\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-ngc5xnXhUs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As seen in the video, this drill is completely underwater, swimming breaststroke on your back. Submerging at the wall, push off and begin swimming breaststroke upside down as far as possible. The drill is meant to work on the timing of the stroke and awareness of resistance. Key to this is keeping your stroke \u201ctight\u201d and within your body lines. If a swimmer has a wide pull or an inefficient kick, they will struggle mightily to make forward progress. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When explaining this drill, make it clear that this drill is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supposed <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to feel completely wrong. You are literally turning the entire stroke on it\u2019s head and essentially learning how to the stroke again. This forces your swimmers to bring more awareness to their stroke and really \u201cfeel\u201d their breaststroke when they go back to swimming full stroke breaststroke. This is a great drill for more advanced breaststroke or IM groups that can take them out of their comfort zone and give them more insight into their stroke.
