MOSS, Norway. SWEDEN dominated the Nordic Junior Championships, held Dec. 9-10 in Moss, Norway. In all, Swedish swimmers won gold in 28 of the 38 events contested in the long course pool. Denmark was a distant second with five, followed by Estonia with three, and Norway and Iceland with one apiece. The meet was open to boys 17 and under, and girls 16 and under.<\/p>\n
Though Sweden easily held sway among its northern neighbors, it was Estonia's Vladimir Labzin, 17, who was the meet's outstanding swimmer. Labzin, who won all of Estonia's gold medals, took the men's 100m breast in 1:04.57, the 200m breast in a blistering 2:16.95, and the 400 IM in 4:31.06.<\/p>\n
Sweden's Malin Frederiksson was the only swimmer to win four individual events. The 14 year-old took the women's 400 free (4;23.48), 800 free (9:02.68), 200 IM (2:20.91) and 400 IM (4:55.89).<\/p>\n
Thea Vanggaard, 15, won three of Denmark's five gold medals as she swept the women's butterfly events clocking 28.56 for the 50, 1:02.99 for the 100 and 2:17.57 for the 200.<\/p>\n
Sweden's Caroline Drab, 15, turned in the outstanding women's performnce of the meet when she won the 50 breast in 32.80. She notched a second win in the 100m breast in 1:12.42.<\/p>\n
Two Swedish teenage boys showed a great deal of future promise. Sixteen year-old Jonas Tilly took both freestyle sprints, clocking 23.65 for the 50 and 51.81 for the 100. Jens Petersson, 17, swept all three backstrokes, clocking 26.59 for the 50, 56.50 for the 100 and 2:05.14 for the 200.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
