Today in\u00a0Set\u00fabal, Portugal the men’s Olympic 10K Open Water field was determined at the final of two qualifying events.<\/p>\n

China’s\u00a0Lijun Zu\u00a0<\/strong>led the lead pack with a 1:52:18.2 to punch his ticket to Rio. Germany’s\u00a0Christian Reichert\u00a0<\/strong>was two seconds behind in 1:52:20.4 for a runner up finish today. Another two seconds behind was Ecuador’s\u00a0Ivan Enderica Ochoa\u00a0<\/strong>in 1:52:22.6.<\/p>\n

Evgenii Drattcev\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia secured his Olympic berth finishing just a tenth behind in 1:52:22.7. Fifth place was a tie between\u00a0Ous Mellouli\u00a0<\/strong>of Tunisia\u00a0and\u00a0Richard Nagy\u00a0<\/strong>of Slovakia, both finishing in\u00a01:52:24.8. Australian\u00a0Jarrod Poort\u00a0<\/strong>nearly made that a three way tie with his seventh place finish of 1:52:24.9.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Andreas Waschburger\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth to the finish in 1:52:25.4, he was five seconds behind his fellow\u00a0countryman, who earned the only available qualification for the Germans.<\/p>\n

Ninth place finisher\u00a0Simon Huitenga\u00a0<\/strong>encountered the same problem, finishing in 1:52:28.1, still inside the top 10, but just over three seconds behind the Australian who earned the Olympic slot for the nation.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Yasunari Hirai\u00a0<\/strong>was tenth in 1:52:31.1, good for a swim\u00a0in Rio. South Africa’s\u00a0Chad Ho\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52:31.6) and Bulgaria’s\u00a0Ventsislav Aydarski\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52:32.3) will complete the field at the Olympic Games this August.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s qualifiers join the top 10 swimmers that qualified during the 2015 Kazan World Championships. In order to assure that there is representation from each continent the top-ranked swimmer from each continent who has not already qualified will automatically qualify for Rio.<\/p>\n

The ten men who qualified in Kazan are\u00a0Jack Burnell<\/strong> (Great Britain), Allan Do Carmo<\/strong> (Brazil), Spyridon Gianniotis<\/strong> (Greece), Marc-Antoine Olivier<\/strong> (France), Simone Ruffini<\/strong> (Italy), Sean Ryan<\/strong> (USA),Federico Vanelli<\/strong> (Italy), Ferry Weertman<\/strong> (Netherlands), Richard Weinberger<\/strong> (Canada), and Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong> (USA).<\/p>\n

Yesterday, Xin Xin, also of China, won the women’s event<\/a>.<\/p>\n
