﻿{"id":207178,"date":"2016-06-09T13:10:44","date_gmt":"2016-06-09T20:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=207178"},"modified":"2016-06-09T13:10:44","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T20:10:44","slug":"four-swimmers-named-cosida-academic-all-american-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/four-swimmers-named-cosida-academic-all-american-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Swimmers Named CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) have named their 2015-2016 Academic All-America At Large teams, and 88 swimmers and divers were honored.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/145-swimmers-and-divers-named-to-cosida-academic-all-district-teams\/\" target=\"_blank\">over 100 swimmers and divers were named to All District Teams<\/a>.\u00a0The At Large teams are comprised of these athletes. A swimmer was named the Academic All-American of the Year at each of the four levels.<\/p>\n<h3>Division I<\/h3>\n<p>Alabama&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Anton McKee\u00a0<\/strong>was named the Division I Men&#8217;s Academic All-American of the year. The junior\u00a0is a three time All-American and has a 4.0 GPA. Joining him on the men&#8217;s Division I first team is his teammate <strong>Conor Oslin<\/strong>.\u00a0Miami Ohio&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evan Bader,\u00a0<\/strong>Texas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Cory Bowersox<\/strong>, Gardner-Webb&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nathan Lile,\u00a0<\/strong>Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>, and Georgia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ty Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>are also first team honorees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Ebert\u00a0<\/strong>of Niagra is on the second team alongside Alabama&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pavel Romanov\u00a0<\/strong>and Michigan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>PJ Ransford<\/strong>. Third team honorees include\u00a0<strong>Ryan Bailey\u00a0<\/strong>of the U.S. Naval Academy and South Dakota State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Weston Christensen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Nine Division I women were honored.\u00a0Louisville&#8217;s multiple time NCAA champion\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>earned her place on the first team, in addition to Cal&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rachael Acker<\/strong> and Tennessee&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Faith Johnson<\/strong>. The other three first team honorees are the U.S. Naval Academy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ellen Bradford<\/strong>, Kentucky&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Danielle Galyer,\u00a0<\/strong>and Texas A&amp;M&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachel Bootsma\u00a0<\/strong>of Cal and\u00a0<strong>Natalie Beale\u00a0<\/strong>of Liberty were awarded second team honors and Boise State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Samantha Wicks\u00a0<\/strong>is on this year&#8217;s third team.<\/p>\n<h3>Division II<\/h3>\n<p>Missouri University of Science and Technology&#8217;s\u00a0senior\u00a0<strong>Keith Sponsler\u00a0<\/strong>is the 2015-2016 NCAA Division II Men&#8217;s Academic-All American of the Year. He is a 17 time All-American and graduated this spring with a 3.92 GPA in nuclear engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Six other swimmers join him on the\u00a0first\u00a0team, including Saint Leo teammates\u00a0<strong>Matheus Assis<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Evan Jacob.\u00a0<\/strong>Edinboro&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Micah Cattell<\/strong>, UC San Diego&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Cohn<\/strong>, Grand Valley State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gianna Ferrero<\/strong>, and Florida Southern&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Diego Gimenez\u00a0<\/strong>round out the first team.<\/p>\n<p>Recipients of this year&#8217;s second team honors for the men are\u00a0Malone&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chris Eckard<\/strong>, Colorado School of Mines&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Brennan Mays<\/strong>, and Gannon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Drew Wolter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There were five third team honorees for the Division II men:\u00a0<strong>Timothy Buff <\/strong>of\u00a0Le Moyne,\u00a0<strong>Miguel Chavez <\/strong>of\u00a0Missouri Science and Tech,\u00a0<strong>Tim Collet\u00a0<\/strong>of Malone,\u00a0<strong>Lucas Cuadros\u00a0<\/strong>of Wingate, and Shippensburg&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Stefan Szilagyi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the Division II women, Lynn teammates <strong>Thalie Carmigianai <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Matthews\u00a0<\/strong>were named to the first team, along with West Floria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Monica Amaral, <\/strong>Wingate&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vika Arkhipova,<\/strong>\u00a0Florida Southern&#8217;s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Kelsey Gouge,<\/strong>\u00a0Wayne State&#8217;s<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hannah Loesch,<\/strong>\u00a0and Ashland&#8217;s<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Hannah Mattar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Elly Maleski\u00a0<\/strong>of Wayne State took home second team honors as did Clarion&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lauren Slayton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Sarah Zerfoss\u00a0<\/strong>and Carson-Newman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nancy Claire Smith.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the third team are UC San Diego&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jaimie Bryan\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Dari Watkins<\/strong>, and Shippensburg&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikki Sargent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Division III<\/h3>\n<p>MIT&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Margaret Guo\u00a0<\/strong>was named the Division III women&#8217;s Academic All-American of the year after her four All American honors this year and her 4.0 GPA in electrical engineering and computer science. She was joined on the first team by Emory&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Aronoff<\/strong>, Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Campbell Costley<\/strong>, Wheaton (Ill)&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Nitz<\/strong>, St. Thomas&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Emma Paulson<\/strong>, Mount Holyoke&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cathleen Pruden<\/strong><strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>Luther&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Clare Slagel\u00a0<\/strong>and Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Haley Townsend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Second team DIII swimmers include Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Carolyn Kane<\/strong>, Emory&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marcela Sanchez-Aizcorbe,<\/strong>\u00a0Messiah&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Reale<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Kristalyn McAfee\u00a0<\/strong>of WashU. This year&#8217;s third team swimmers are Grove City&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Abby Jank<\/strong>, RPI&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shanny Lin<\/strong>, RIT&#8217;s <strong>Natalie Snyder,\u00a0<\/strong>Olivet&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leah Lupu<\/strong>, and St. Mary&#8217;s (MD)\u00a0<strong>Cara Machlin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Representing the Division III men on the first team are\u00a0<strong>Brad Brooks\u00a0<\/strong>of McDaniel and WashU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Reed Dalton<\/strong>. Those two are joined by Johns Hopkins&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Andrew Greenhalgh<\/strong>, Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jack Lindell<\/strong>, Kenyon&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trevor Manz,\u00a0<\/strong>Washington and Jefferson&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Willison<\/strong>,\u00a0and Rose-Hulman&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Orion Martin.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WPI&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nathan Hughes\u00a0<\/strong>was named to the second team as was MIT&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daryl Neubieser,\u00a0<\/strong>Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrew Rich<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Jason Wesseling<\/strong>, Calvin&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brett Stoughton<\/strong>, and Williams&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Jake Tamposi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hayes Burdette-Sapp\u00a0<\/strong>of Emory,\u00a0<strong>Daniel Goldstein\u00a0<\/strong>of Grinnell<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Tommy Thetford\u00a0<\/strong>of Washington and Lee garnered third team selections.<\/p>\n<h3>College Division (NAIA, Canadian, and two-year institutions)<\/h3>\n<p>Olivet Nazarene&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jacob Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>took home men&#8217;s Academic All-American of the year recognition. The senior is a six time national champion with a 3.73 GPA. British Columbia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Colin Eriks\u00a0<\/strong>was also named to the first team.
