Global water instinct brand arena<\/strong> has announced the appointment of Mark Pinger<\/strong> as General Manager of\u00a0its North American subsidiary. Mr. Pinger brings extensive experience in the global\u00a0sporting goods industry to arena, and his selection follows an intensive scouting and interview process.<\/p>\n

Born in southern Germany near the French\u00a0border, the 45-year- old Pinger\u00a0represented his country as a swimmer in\u00a0the 1990s, and won bronze medals in the\u00a04×100 freestyle relay at both the 1992 (Split 48.80) and\u00a01996 Olympic Games in Barcelona and\u00a0Atlanta. He was also named German\u00a0swimmer of the year in 1992.<\/p>\n

Following his swimming career, Pinger earned an undergraduate business degree from the University\u00a0of Miami and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.\u00a0 He also competed for Miami at the NCAA\u00a0Championships in swimming. Pinger entered the business world in 1999 as a business analyst\u00a0at McKinsey and Company, and in 2003 left to join Nike (Read SW Exclusive Interview)<\/span><\/a>, where he started out at Global Headquarters\u00a0in Beaverton, Oregon. In 2007 he moved on to assignments in Hong Kong as Chief Operating Director\u00a0of Asia Pacific Apparel, in China as Vice President of Merchandising, in Germany as General Manager of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and at the European Headquarters in Hilversum, the Netherlands,\u00a0as General Manager of Nike Basketball, Jordan, Athletic Training and Tennis.\u00a0In 2013 he returned to Global Headquarters in Beaverton as General Manager of Nike Pro.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very excited about this opportunity,\u201d said Pinger. \u201cI grew up with arena in Germany at a time it\u00a0was the leading swimwear brand; my club was outfitted by arena, and I won an Olympic bronze medal in\u00a01992 wearing an arena suit. In my business career, I have been connected to sports for over 12 years. Swimming is still close to my heart \u2013 I swim regularly in a masters program, both of my daughters are\u00a0competitive swimmers, and my wife, whom I met at a training camp, is a swim coach. So working at arena\u00a0feels like coming home. I am looking forward to combining my knowledge from the sporting goods industry\u00a0with my passion for swimming to grow the arena brand in the US.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pinger\u2019s mandate as the leader of arena\u2019s North American operations will be to fuel the growth of the\u00a0business and the organization by winning the hearts and minds of athletes in the pool. Working in close\u00a0cooperation with the company\u2019s Global Teams, he will report directly to arena CEO Cristiano Portas\u00a0at global headquarters in Tolentino, Italy.<\/p>\n

Since 1973, arena has created and marketed waterwear products for competitive swimmers and swimming\u00a0fans worldwide, and is universally recognised as one of the premium brands of high quality swimwear and\u00a0equipment. Over the last 40 years, arena has developed strong expertise in creating best in class products\u00a0with particular focus on the pool segment, while also expanding into leisure and beach wear.<\/p>\n

Today the arena brand has a presence in 116 countries around the globe. With direct representation\u00a0through wholly-owned subsidiaries in Italy, France, Germany\/Austria and the USA, the group also employs a\u00a0network of 33 qualified business partners in 100 countries, while the Japan-based Descente Group owns\u00a0and manages the brand in 11 countries of the Far East\u00a0arena\u2019s ties to the world of sport, and swimming in particular, are reinforced through sponsoring activities\u00a0at different levels, including governing bodies, national federations, athletes and clubs.<\/p>\n

In an historic agreement signed in early 2014, arena became the principal sponsor and technical partner of\u00a0the swimming world\u2019s governing body, FINA (F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de Natation).
