AUSTIN, Texas, March 7. THE third and final day of swimming came to a close at the USA Swimming Grand Prix held in Austin, Texas. While prelims were held in short course yards, finals are being contested in the long course meter format.<\/p>\n
Women's 200 back<\/b>
\nKirsty Coventry eased through the event in her home pool with a swift time of 2:07.59 for the win. Texas super freshman Kathleen Hersey collected second-place honors with a time of 2:11.20, while Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza kept on earning overall points with a third-place 2:11.96.<\/p>\n
Men's 200 back<\/b>
\nSuburban's Ian Clark cleared the 2:00 barrier with a winning effort of 1:59.65. North Baltimore's Nick Thoman touched second in 2:01.47, while Memphis Thunder's Michael Sheppard rounded out the top three in 2:02.79.<\/p>\n
Women's 100 free<\/b>
\nWhile Athens Bulldog Kara Lynn Joyce captured the event title with a speedy 55.03, second and third place might have been the biggest storyline in the race. Minot's Dagny Knutson (55.69) and NBAC's Katie Hoff (55.82) demonstrated some top end speed to complete the top three. Samantha Tucker of Longhorn also claimed fourth in 55.95.<\/p>\n
Men's 100 free<\/b>
\nAuburn's Fred Bousquet continued his dominant run at the meet with a blistering fast time of 48.48 in the 100 free. Longhorn's Garrett Weber-Gale claimed second place with a time of 48.88, while Auburn's Cesar Cielo gave the crowd a third sub-49 time with a third-place 48.92.<\/p>\n
Women's 800 free<\/b>
\nTexas' Susana Escobar cruised in the distance event with a winning time of 8:36.95, while La Mirada's Samantha Shellem touched second in 8:45.75. Amber McDermott completed the podium in 8:50.31.<\/p>\n
Men's 1500 free<\/b>
\nDelaware's Andrew Gemmell claimed the men's distance free title in 15:23.76 by more than three seconds. Germany's Chris Kuhbusch turned in a second-place time of 15:27.26, while Mexico's Faci Delgadillo touched third in 15:34.61.<\/p>\n

\nIn an exciting finish, Lakeside's Elizabeth Tinnon charged down the homestretch to catch Bluefish's Laura Sogar to earn a tie with matching times of 2:31.73. Suburban's Corrie Clark grabbed the third-place spot with a readout of 2:32.23.<\/p>\n

\nLonghorn's Eric Shanteau demolished the field with a quick time of 2:09.97 for the victory. B.J. Johnson clinched second-place honors with a time of 2:15.62, while Longhorn's Matthew Lowe touched out Tucson Ford's Bart Steninger, 2:17.51 to 2:17.77, for third place.<\/p>\n

\nAfter taking a few more silvers and bronze finishes than she has been accustomed to during this Grand Prix circuit, Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza threw down a 2:09.01 to claim the 200 fly. Her closest competition came from Minot's Dagny Knutson, who placed second in 2:12.74. Bluefish's Alex Forrester rounded out the top three in 2:14.16.<\/p>\n

\nAuburn's Robert Looney snared the event title with a time of 1:58.92, while Club Wolverine's Alex Vanderkaay placed second with a time of 1:59.27. West Virginia's Pablo Marmolejo clinched third in 2:00.43.<\/p>\n

\nTexas' Kathleen Hersey, Hee-jin Chang, Katharine Riefenstahl and Karlee Bispo raced to the win in 3:42.57, while Longhorn's Kirsty Coventry, Samantha Tucker, Tanica Jamison and Erin Flanigan finished second in 3:46.48. Texas' B team of Leah Gingrich, Adrienne Woods, Brie Powers and Rebecca Tomlin rounded out the podium in 3:52.12.<\/p>\n

\nTucson Ford's Albert Subirats, Adam Ritter, Masayuki Kishida and Bart Steninger completed the meet with a winning time of 3:22.80.
