PHOENIX, Dec. 16. SO you think you\u2019ve got a fast relay team??? Try going up against this squad of Masters!<\/p>\n
A Phoenix Swim Club quartet, coached by Matt and Mark Rankin, broke the unofficial world record for the 4 x one-hour medley relay in an official time trial this morning. <\/p>\n
Cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of 75, consisting of friends, spouses, kids, other Masters and assorted hecklers, and legitimized by electronic and hand timing and official counters in each lane, the team of Samuel W. Perry, 32 (back), Gregory J. Dozer, 43 (breast), Mark G. Booth, 40 (fly) and Kent M. Johnson, 32 (free) amassed 18,300 yards. That broke the record of 17,075 yards set a year ago by a team from the Cambridge (Mass.) Masters, by some 1,225 yards. <\/p>\n
Perry swam 4,875 yards of backstroke in the hour, an average of 1:13.84 per 100 yards. His final 100 was 1:09. <\/p>\n
Dozer swam 4,150 yards of breaststroke in the hour, averaging 1:26.75 per 100; he split 1:17 for his final 100.<\/p>\n
Booth swam 4,250 yards of butterfly in the hour, averaging 1:24.70 per 100. He split 1:24 for his final 100.<\/p>\n
Johnson swam 5,050 yards of freestyle in the hour, averaging 1:11.64 per 100. He split 1:12 for his final 100.<\/p>\n
