LONG BEACH, California, March 4. KICKING off the Men's Pac-10 Championship in Long Beach, Calif., the Arizona men's swimming team won the 800 freestyle relay and placed third in the 200 medley relay at the Belmont Plaza Pool.<\/p>\n
Arizona won the 800 freestyle relay in breathtaking fashion as Joel Greenshields out touched Stanford's Phillip Morrison to win the event with a time of 6:14.82. The time earned the Cats a qualifying time at NCAA's next month. The relay time was also good for a new Pac-10 meet and conference record.<\/p>\n
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Ivan Tolic, Marcus Titus, Bryan O'Connor and Jordan Smith turned in an NCAA qualifying time of 1:25.23 and placed third overall in the meet. California won the event with a time of 1:23.98.<\/p>\n
In heat one of the 200 medley relay, the Wildcats finished first and second, respectively, with the foursome of Jake Tapp, Josh Arreguin, Adam Small and Rob Iddiols winning the race in 1:26.56.<\/p>\n
"I'm really proud of these guys tonight," said head coach Frank Busch. "We had goals set for this first night and I feel like we accomplished them."<\/p>\n
The "C" team for the Cats consisting of Pete Stacy, Tom Cole, Kevin Munsch and Nick Hadinger had an impressive time of 1:28.84 in the 200 medley relay as well.<\/p>\n
Swimming time trials for the Wildcats were Kevin Munsch, Jordan Slaughter and Pete Stacy. Slaughter earned an NCAA consideration time in the 200 fly with a 1:43.70. His time is currently good for 20th in the country.<\/p>\n
At the end of day one, Arizona and Cal are tied for first place with 72 points.<\/p>\n
