THE first evening of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships kicked off in Buffalo, N.Y., this evening. The end of the night ended with Indian River State College in its standard position above both the men's and women's team title races. Heading into this weekend, IRCC has won 34 straight men's titles and 27 straight women's titles.

The women finished the night with 80 points, ahead of Darton's 68 points. Genesee (62), Monroe (62) and Lincoln (54) made up the rest of the women's top five. IRCC also had 80 points for the men with Darton and Lincoln tied for second with 66 points each. Monroe (60) and Ocean County (54) stood fourth and fifth.

IRSC's team of Monika Mialka (55.49), Mary Frank (1:02.96), Yesica Rojas (56.67) and Jennifer Marquez (49.58) clocked an NJCAA-record time of 3:44.70 to win the women's 400-yard medley relay. The effort crushed the previous record of 3:50.91 set by IRCC back in 2000. Notably, Mialka's leadoff time broke her NJCAA record of 55.53 set last year.

IRSC's men's 400-yard medley relay squad of Zack Stockman (49.71), Emmett Walling (52.53), Robbie Sullivan (46.69) and Kelley Wyman (44.25) posted a time of 3:13.18 to beat the previous NJCAA standard of 3:14.60 set by IRCC in 2008. The time also broke the pool record of 3:17.62 set by Cal State-Bakersfield in 2004.

Indian River's women's 800-yard freestyle relay foursome of Mialka (1:50.80), Marquez (1:48.41), Jessica Chandlee (1:51.53) and Mary O'Sullivan (1:50.90) demolished the NJCAA record with a time of 7:21.64. The performance wiped out the 7:35.45 set by IRCC back in 2006 and smashed the pool record of 7:24.25 set by Fordham last month.

The men's 800-yard freestyle relay NJCAA record withstood a charge as IRSC's Andy Garcia-Montes, Sullivan, Wyman and Mateo De Angulo won in 6:35.56. The standing record sits at 6:34.24 as set by IRCC in 2008.

BUFFALO, New York, March 4.
