Schmitt, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the 200 free, trailed Geer\u00a0at the halfway point but used a strong finishing split to pull ahead. He trailed\u00a0<strong>Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>at the halfway point, 23.89 to 23.98, before turning on the jets. But he needed a furious finish to hold off a charging\u00a0<strong>Jack Conger<\/strong>. Phelps did so by the fingertip margin of one one-hundredth of a second.<\/p>\n<p>North Baltimore&#8217;s Phelps clocked 49.49 for the victory, ahead of Nation&#8217;s Capital&#8217;s Conger in 49.50. North Baltimore&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Nolan\u00a0<\/strong>was the only other man under 50 seconds with his 49.80. Notably, Phelps&#8217; time was much slower than the 48.74 that\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>posted earlier in the evening in Knoxville, Tenn.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn&#8217;s <strong>Clay Youngquist<\/strong> was fourth in 50.09, and Tucson Ford&#8217;s Grevers fell to fifth in 50.45. Cox posted a 2:28.31, and Sogar, officially representing Bluefish, had to settle for second in 2:28.80. The two-time NCAA champion and new short course yards American record-holder in the event put up a 2:10.68 that ranks him just behind\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.51) and\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.68) as the top Americans in the long course version of the event this season. The time falls just short of his own lifetime best (2:10.02) that he swam on his way to a second-place finish at the 2015 National Championships in San Antonio.<\/p>\n<p>North Baltimore&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz\u00a0<\/strong>tried to go with Licon on the first 100 but could not keep pace down the stretch, and Kalisz settled for second in 2:12.57. Longhorn&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andrew Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>came in third at 2:16.52.<\/p>\n<p>Tigershark&#8217;s <strong>Hayden Henry<\/strong> edged Dynamo&#8217;s <strong>Basil Orr<\/strong> for fourth, 2:17.59 to 2:17.74. But Phelps, as he so often does, came charging on the back half.
