SYRACUSE, New York, February 27. THE Alfred University men's swimming and diving team remained in first place after Friday's second day of action at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) championships, being held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Nottingham High School in Syracuse.<\/p>\n
AU seniors Brian Agro (Gray, ME\/Cheverus) and Matt Baker (Weedsport, NY\/Weedsport) each won state titles in NCAA "B" cut qualifying times. Agro won the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.86 seconds, and Baker won the 100-yard back in 50.79 seconds.<\/p>\n
Baker has already earned an automatic qualifying time in the 100 back and will compete in that event at next month's NCAA Division III championships. Agro's win in the 100 breast was his second at the championships; he won the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The UNYSCSA championships also serve as the Empire 8 Conference championships. Alfred is the two-time defending UNYSCSA and Empire 8 champs. After Friday's races, AU leads with 795 points, followed by RPI (686 points) and Ithaca (681).<\/p>\n
AU also won both relays Friday. Matt Baker, Agro, sophomore Zach Mix (Mt. Morris, NY\/Mt. Morris) and senior Mark Baker (Weedsport, NY\/Weedsport) won the 200-yard medley relay in a school-record and NCAA "B" cut qualifying time of 1:32.34. The team of Matt Baker, Mark Baker, sophomore Tyler Olsen (Saratoga Springs, NY\/Saratoga) and junior Andrew Brisson (Greenwich, CT\/Greenwich) won the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:59.58.<\/p>\n
Brisson was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.21, which mety NCAA "B" qualifying standards.<\/p>\n
Mix (51.77 seconds) and senior Scott Sarkissian (Oswego, NY\/Oswego) (52.50 seconds) were seventh and ninth, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly; Mark Baker (1:46.75) and Olsen (1:46.76) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 200-yard free; senior Dan Stapes (Wilbraham, MA\/Wilbraham-Monson) (1:00.05) and freshman Warren Dolben (Rye, NH\/Berwick Academy) (1:00.34) were 11th and 15th, respectively, in the 100-yard breast; and sophomore Ted Remington (Pike, NY\/Letchworth) was 13th in the 400-yard individual medley (4:27.62).<\/p>\n
The UNYSCSA Championship meet concludes Saturday, with preliminary heats in the morning and afternoon and finals in the evening.<\/p>\n
