Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While U.S. Trials start in less than a month, swimmers across the country are scrambling to get their OT cuts. Notable this week were three veterans to the U.S. National scene getting their Trial cuts just in the nick of time. <\/span><b>Erika Erndl <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of T2 Aquatics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/t2s-erika-erndl-qualifies-for-5th-u-s-olympic-trials\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qualified for her fifth Olympic Trials, posting a 1:00.94 in the 100 meter butterfly at a meet in Naples this week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That cleared the cut of 1:01.19, and came a day before <\/span><b>Erndl\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">38th birthday. Her son, born in 2014, was in attendance at the meet. <\/span><b>Erndl <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has competed in the 1996, 2000, 2008, and 2012 Olympic Trials. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also qualifying for the meet were 32-year old South Carolina assistant coach <\/span><b>Kevin Swander <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and 35-year old <\/span><b>Ed Moses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both in the 100 meter breaststroke. <\/span><b>Moses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who owns an Olympic Gold medal from the 2000 Olympics, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/olympic-gold-medalist-ed-moses-qualifies-for-4th-olympic-trials-on-short-notice\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">posted a 1:03.35 at a meet in Irvine, after reportedly only completing two swim practices in the last 4 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Inspired by <\/span><b>Moses\u2019 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/south-carolina-coach-kevin-swander-answers-ed-moses-with-trials-cut-of-his-own\/\"><b>Swander <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put up a 1:02.18 in the event the next day at the Carolina Aquatics Breakout May Meet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If not, he argued, the Russian contingent should be banned from competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tygart <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not mince words, stating that what Russia has done is \u201can assault on the fundamental values of the Olympic movement.\u201d He then goes on to provide evidence, citing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shocking-fina-executive-director-see-documentary-russia-doping-scandal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">German expose claiming Russian athletes were part of a widespread doping scheme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and details an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/former-moscow-lab-director-confirms-urine-tampering-and-systematic-doping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alleged urine swapping scheme that occurred at the 2014 Sochi Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also brings in former Russian anti doping official <strong>Vitaly Stepanov<\/strong>, who apparently has been voicing concerns to WADA regarding Russian doping since 2010. First, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/hollie-bonewit-cron-to-head-newly-combined-miami-university-program\/\"><b>Hollie Bonewit-Cron<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was named the Head Coach of Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s Swimming and Diving at Miami University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Bonewit-Cron<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes to Miami after a successfully building the program from the ground up, amassing an impressive resume during her time with two Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year honors, four SSC Championship wins, and 12 NCAA Titles from six individual NCAA Champions. On the other side of the pool, two-time NCAA Champion and 2012 NCAA Diver of the Year <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2-time-ncaa-champion-drew-livingston-hired-as-princeton-head-diving-coach\/\"><b>Drew Livingston <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was named the Head Diving Coach at Princeton University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coming from a two year stint at LSU, <\/span><b>Livingston <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have big shoes to fill. He is replacing <\/span><b>Greg Gunn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who has coached 30 individual Ivy League champions, 9 All-America honorees, and contributed to 36 Ivy League Swimming &amp; Diving Championships during his 30 years at Princeton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, in one of the most anticipated coaching announcements this season, former Stanford men\u2019s Assistant <\/span><b>Scott Armstrong <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanford-assistant-scott-armstrong-hired-as-johns-hopkins-head-coach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was announced as the future head coach of the John Hopkins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking over for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/george-kennedy-honored-with-speedo-cscaa-lifetime-achievement-award\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the legendary <\/span><b>George Kennedy<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1l93bjb2fGutMx8VbK3Nmdr2KPJ0sLG_fK_A-CV5xTTk\/edit\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced his retirement earlier this year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Armstrong <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a 2003 Hopkins graduate, and was just recently inducted into the Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame. This comes just a week after the IOC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/31-athletes-caught-doping-in-retest-of-2008-olympic-samples\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found 31 positive tests from retests of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Similar to the Beijing retests, the London retests focused on those athletes potentially competing in Rio. Over 265 samples were retested from London. This is why we are acting swiftly now. I have already appointed a disciplinary commission, which has the full power to make all the decisions on behalf of the IOC.\u201d Any athletes who test positive will be barred from the 2016 Rio Olympics. In a letter reportedly written to World Health Organization Director <strong>Dr<\/strong>. <\/span><b>Margaret Chan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the groups called for the Olympic Games to be cancelled or postponed, much like <\/span><b>Amir Attaran\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">call in the Harvard Public Health Review. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Rio Olympics starting in roughly two months, this is another serious call from the science community claiming the Rio Games poses a major threat to global health given the state of the Zika Virus. Not all in the scientific community are in favor of moving the Games. This public opposition from scientists came just as the director of the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, <strong>Dr. Tom Frieden<\/strong>, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/zeenews.india.com\/sports\/others\/zika-not-a-reason-to-cancel-rio-olympics-says-us-health-official_1889253.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said there was no reason to cancel the Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While he said there is always inherent risk with travel, when it comes to Rio \u201cthe risk is not particularly high other than for pregnant women,\u201d Frieden said. Following the publication of the open letter, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-health-organization-rejects-call-to-move-rio-olympics-due-to-zika-virus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the World Health Organization (WHO) has rejected the call to move the Games<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stating there is \u201cno public health
