LAS VEGAS, Nevada, February 27. THE USA Swimming Sectional season kicked off this week as the first two nights of swimming have taken place at the Las Vegas stop of the series.<\/p>\n
On the first night of swimming, Haley Anderson crushed the women's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:49.56. Catherine Breed took second in 10:00.57, while Jasmine Tosky placed third just behind in 10:00.85. Anderson is a Swimming World<\/i> five-star prospect headed to the University of Southern California in the fall. <\/p>\n
Among the men, four-star Zane Grothe clinched the distance title in 9:11.16, while five-star Ben Hinshaw (9:13.65) and five-star Nick Trowbridge (9:22.42) rounded out the top three in the men's 1000-yard free.<\/p>\n
During the second night of swimming, six-star Yumi So set a sectional record in the women's 200 fly with a time of 1:57.28. The swim edged the 1:57.51 set by Yana Klockkova back in 2003. Madeline DiRado finished second in 1:58.17, while Lyndsay De Paul took third in 1:59.05.<\/p>\n
Evan Virtue followed with a triumph in the men's 200-yard fly when he stopped the clock in 1:48.86. Matthew Murray took second in 1:50.00, while Justin DiFederico placed third in 1:50.12.<\/p>\n
Another sectional record tumbled as six-star Kasey Carlson (2:09.66) and five-star Paige Bradley (2:13.66) both broke the 2:13.85 set by Alexandra Ellis in 2006 in the women's 200-yard breast. Melissa Bates wound up third in 2:15.38.<\/p>\n
In the men's 200-yard breast, Trevor Hoyt went sub-2:00 with a swift time of 1:58.14 for the win. Five-star Cody Miller took second in 2:00.97, while Hinshaw placed third in 2:03.93.<\/p>\n
Madison White, 14, earned the women's 200-yard back title in 1:57.06, while Laurence Delisle (2:00.07) and Karen Wang (2:00.31) touched second and third, respectively. Trowbridge returned from a third-place finish in the 1000 on the first day to win the 200-yard back in 1:48.11. Shayne Fleming (1:49.85) and Ryan Pickett (1:50.57) completed the podium.<\/p>\n
The 100 frees completed the second night. Madeline Schaefer and Carlson tied for the women's title with matching 49.88s, while Alexandra Whitford placed third in 50.54.
