THE No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team repeated as 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay champion and sits in first place after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday evening (Feb. 23) at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines began the meet on a high note in the 200-yard medley relay as the quartet of sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan\/St. Mary's International), senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill.\/Saint Patrick), sophomore Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va.\/James Madison) and senior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn.\/Chaska) successfully defended U-M's title. Michigan held off the Buckeyes in a hotly contested race, touching the wall in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 1:25.39.<\/p>\n
Junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn.\/Towson) was the lone returnee to Michigan's Big Ten record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay, but the result with three new teammates was just the same. Madwed, sophomore Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario\/Silverthorn Collegiate), freshman Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J.\/Rumson-Fair Haven) and freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind.\/Chesterton) finished atop the podium on a time of 6:20.11, extending Michigan's dominance in the event to 11 consecutive titles. Michigan chased Ohio State up and down the pool but took the lead with two lengths to go.<\/p>\n
The Wolverines continue with day two of the Big Ten Championships tomorrow (Thursday, Feb. 24) at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center. Preliminaries begin at 11 a.m. CST, with the finals set to begin at 6:30 p.m. CST.<\/p>\n
