{"id":204822,"date":"2016-05-27T08:38:11","date_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=204822"},"modified":"2016-05-27T08:38:11","modified_gmt":"2016-05-27T15:38:11","slug":"more-zika-fears-as-scientists-call-for-2016-rio-olympics-to-be-moved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/more-zika-fears-as-scientists-call-for-2016-rio-olympics-to-be-moved\/","title":{"rendered":"More Zika Fears as Scientists Call For 2016 Rio Olympics To Be Moved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just weeks after the <em>Harvard Public Health Review<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/harvard-public-health-review-2016-rio-olympics-should-be-cancelled-due-to-zika-virus\/\" target=\"_blank\">called for the 2016 Rio Olympics to be cancelled due to the Zika virus<\/a>, a group of 125 scientists and health experts have written a letter to World Health Organization Director <strong>Dr. Margaret Chan<\/strong> stating that the Olympics must be moved or postponed according to <em>ABC News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This news comes at the same time as <strong>Dr. Tom Frieden<\/strong>, the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, <a href=\"http:\/\/zeenews.india.com\/sports\/others\/zika-not-a-reason-to-cancel-rio-olympics-says-us-health-official_1889253.html\" target=\"_blank\">has said that there is no public health reason to cancel or delay the Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Frieden, however, has stated that the risk is not zero that someone could contract the Zika virus while at the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Currently, many athletes, delegations, and journalists are struggling with the decision of whether to participate in the Rio 2016 Games,&#8221; the group wrote as reported by <em>ABC News<\/em>. &#8220;We agree with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control recommendation that workers should &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.utoledo.edu\/disastermedicine\/category\/zika-virus\/page\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Consider delaying travel to areas with active Zika virus transmission<\/a>&#8216;. If that advice were followed uniformly, no athlete would have to choose between risking disease and participating in a competition that many have trained for their whole lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The group also states that there are historic levels of the birth defect microcephaly in Brazil, a defect linked to the Zika virus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That while Zika\u2019s risk to any single individual is low, the risk to a population is undeniably high.
