A total of 23 athletes from five different sports tested positive for banned substances during sample retests from the 2012 London Olympics, the International Olympic Committee announced today.<\/p>\n
Announced shortly after the IOC revealed a rash of positive samples from retesting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the latest set of retests took place as part of 265 samples that were reanalysed.<\/p>\n
Last week, the IOC released that up to 31 athletes were caught as part of the reanalysis of 454 samples from Beijing.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese reanalyses show, once again, our determination in the fight against doping,\u201d said IOC President Thomas Bach<\/strong>. \u201cWe want to keep the dopers away from the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. This is why we are acting swiftly now. I have already appointed a disciplinary commission, which has the full power to take all the decisions on behalf of the IOC.\u201d<\/p>\n Due to privacy reasons, the IOC has not yet made any of the latest new positives known as each athlete will have the chance to appeal.<\/p>\n IOC Press Release:<\/strong><\/p>\n The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced today that reanalysis of the \u201cA\u201d samples from 23 athletes in five sports and from six National Olympic Committees (NOCs) who competed at the Olympic Games London 2012 has returned Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs)*.<\/p>\n In total, 265 selected doping samples from the Olympic Games London 2012 were reanalysed, all based on intelligence-gathering that began in August 2015. The reanalysis programme is ongoing, with the possibility of more results in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n Last week the IOC announced that up to 31 athletes could be banned from competing at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 after the reanalysis of 454 samples from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. They are part of the IOC\u2019s efforts to protect the clean athletes by keeping dopers away from the Olympic Games Rio 2016 and protecting the integrity of the competition. The reanalysis follows work with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the IFs, which started already in August 2015. It was mainly focused on athletes who could potentially participate in the Olympic Games Rio 2016.<\/p>\n The athletes, NOCs and IFs concerned are already being informed, after which the proceedings against the athletes can begin.
