MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, February 21. THE Carleton women’s swimming and diving team won the MIAC Championship in convincing fashion finishing 101.5 points ahead of second place Gustavus. The meet was held at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis. The University of St. Thomas finished third with 496 points, and St. Olaf was fourth place with 479 points. The Knight’s title was the third in program history, but the first since winning back-to-back titles in the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons.<\/p>\n
Carleton picked up two event titles on the day including Kaarin Taylor in the 200 butterfly, and Maggie Alexander in the 200 backstroke. Alexander’s time of 2:03.04 in the 200 back was a new conference and meet record.<\/p>\n
Other event champions on the day included Annie Flanagan of Macalester, who won the 1-meter diving with a 404.80, Carrie Gundersen of Gustavus, who won the 1650 freestyle in a new conference and meet record time of 17:09.69, Anika Erickson of Gustavus, who won the 200 breaststroke in a meet record time of 2:21.93, Becca Nye of St. Thomas, who won the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.87, and the St. Thomas 400 free relay team of Jena Root, Ali Krieger, Maddie Frost, Becca Nye, which won in a new meet record time of 3:30.30.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the St. Olaf men’s swimming and diving team claimed its second MIAC Championship in the last three years with 851 points. Defending champion Gustavus finished second with 738 points, while the University of St. Thomas placed third with 487, and Carleton finished fourth with 441. <\/p>\n
The Ole’s claimed three more first place finishes on the final day including Ian Straehly in the 3-meter diving (434.5 points), Jake Koch in the 100 freestyle with a new conference and meet record time of 44.89, and Nelson Westby in the 200 breaststroke in a new conference and meet record time of 2:01.44.<\/p>\n
It was another record-breaking day for the men as four conference records were broken in the seven events held during the day. Skylar Davis of Gustavus started the evening session off by winning the 1650 freestyle for the third consecutive year in a new meet record time of 15:49.04. Peter Mullee of St. Thomas then broke the conference and meet record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.27, followed by Jake Koch of St. Olaf breaking a 10-year old conference record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.89. Later, Nelson Westby of St. Olaf broke the conference and meet record in the 200 breaststroke with at ime of 2:01.44 and Matt Stewart won the 200 butterfly in a new conference and meet record time of 1:49.28.<\/p>\n
