The 32-year old backstroker has been trying to get out of his Russian citizenship for over three years, and has consequently missed out on major international meets in that time. In a letter he reportedly received from FINA, the organization cited his residency as the main reason for denying his request. <\/span><b>Vyatchanin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been competing in the Arena Pro Series in the U.S. as a means to earn money to continue training. FINA Executive Director <\/span><b>Cornel Marculescu <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denied any involvement in the case, although <\/span><b>Vyatchanin <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims that <\/span><b>Marculescu\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signature in on the letter he received from the organization. Samples from Olympic athletes are kept for 10 years in order to retest with the most up to date technology possible. This particular retest focused on athletes who are planning to compete in Rio this summer. If found with a positive retest on a sample, athletes are retroactively disqualified and will lose their medals. This came on the heels of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ny-times-calls-for-russia-to-be-banned-from-rio-2\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that claimed drug samples from the 2014 Sochi Olympics were tampered with as well as a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbs.com\/shows\/60_minutes\/video\/TKxyirElxI86tkoGcLTm81wUZPX27gyZ\/russia-s-dark-secret-the-killing-machine-earthquake-alley\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60 Minutes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report on systematic doping in Russia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The IOC has said they will investigate the samples from Sochi and also called on WADA to investigate Russian drug-testing operations. The IOC also plans to retest 250 samples from the London Olympics. Both countries have already completed their Olympic Trials, so this was an opportunity for qualifiers from both countries to continue to tune up with Rio only a couple months away. <\/span><b>Cameron McEvoy <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a stand-out for the Australian men, sweeping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rie-kanetou-cameron-mcevoy-deliver-impressive-swims-in-day-3-finals-of-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 50 (21.61)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kosuke-hagino-improves-own-world-leading-400-im-at-night-2-of-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 (48.17)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daiya-seto-clocks-2nd-ranked-200-fly-to-kick-off-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 freestyles (1:46.41)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That 200 freestyle win was a close race with Japanese star <\/span><b>Kosuke Hagino, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who finished second in 1:46.43. <\/span><b>Hagino <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kosuke-hagino-improves-own-world-leading-400-im-at-night-2-of-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improved his world leading time in the 400 IM (4:08.85)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rie-kanetou-cameron-mcevoy-deliver-impressive-swims-in-day-3-finals-of-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">picked up a win in the 200 IM (1:56.13)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other notable swims included <\/span><b>Daiya Seto <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">matching his second ranked time in the world <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/daiya-seto-clocks-2nd-ranked-200-fly-to-kick-off-japan-open\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a 1:54.14 in the 200 butterfly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the women\u2019s side, <\/span><b>Cate Campbell <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continued to impress with a sweep of the 50 and 100 freestyle. Bick<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According the a Russian media agency, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-reportedly-lifts-yuliya-efimovas-provisional-suspension\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FINA has lifted the provisional suspension that was placed on <\/span><b>Yuliya Efimova <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">back in March<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While that does not clear her to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games (that will depend on a separate hearing), it does allow her to continue training with an official club<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That provisional suspension <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/yuliya-efimova-reportedly-tests-positive-for-meldonium\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
