BERKELEY, California, February 21. NO. 1 Stanford men's swimming (8-0, 5-0 Pac-10) completed an unbeaten regular season with a 153-109 victory over California on Saturday afternoon from the Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was the fourth consecutive dual meet win for Stanford over Cal.<\/p>\n
The Cardinal got their meet off to a strong start by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:10.87. The experienced team of Eugene Godsoe, Paul Kornfeld, Austin Staab and Jason Dunford defeated the team from Cal by almost two seconds.<\/p>\n
Dunford and Godsoe also won events as individuals for Stanford. Dunford captured the 50 free where he was the only swimmer in the field to break 20 seconds with a time of 19.65. Godsoe also dominated his event, the 200 back, winning with a time of 1:45.62<\/p>\n
In the first individual event, it was time for a pair of Stanford freshmen to shine. Chad La Tourette easily captured the 1,000 free with a time of 9:07.40, but teammate Michael Zoldos also came through for the Cardinal, finishing second with a time of 9:17.85 to edge Isaac Howell of Cal by a hundredth of a second.<\/p>\n
La Tourette also captured a second event later in the meet when he won the 500 free with a time of 4:29.24.<\/p>\n
The most exciting race of the day was the 200 IM, with Nate Cass edging Martin Liivamagi of Cal by a hundredth of a second. Cass finished with a time of 1:48.60, coming from behind on the final freestyle length.<\/p>\n
Cass also doubled up his victories in the 400 IM, winning with a time of 3:54.80.<\/p>\n
The final event winner for Stanford was Bobby Bollier in the 200 fly. Bollier finished with a time of 1:47.87 to just edge his teammate David Mosko who finished second with a time of 1:47.98.<\/p>\n
In diving, Dwight Dumais swept both events, winning the 1-meter with a score of 332.17 and the 3-meter with a score of 371.85.<\/p>\n
Cal was led by Nathan Adrian who won both the 100 and 200 freestyle races.<\/p>\n
The Big Meet concludes the regular season for both Stanford and Cal. Both will next compete in the Pac-10 Championships Wed.-Sat., March 4-7. The Cardinal will be looking to extend their impressive streak of 27 consecutive Pac-10 titles, a Pac-10 record for any sport.<\/p>\n
