Women’s 1500 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Boglarka Kapas<\/strong> followed up her 800-meter free win with another distance triumph as she dominated the women’s 1500-meter free at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Kapas clocked a winning time of 15:50.22. \u00a0That’s nearly 20 seconds better than the previous world best of 16:08.38 clocked by Mireia Belmonte<\/strong> at the Spanish Spring Nationals. \u00a0It also crushed Belmonte’s meet record of 15:57.29 set back in 2014 at the Berlin edition of the meet.<\/p>\n

Kapas won by nearly 10 seconds as Belmonte took second in 16:00.20 for the second spot in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Spain’s Maria Vilas Vidal<\/strong> wound up taking third overall in a time of 16:01.25, now third in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> crushed the meet record in the men’s 100-meter fly at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Cseh clocked a time of 50.86, blasting the previous mark of 51.38 set by Konrad Czerniak<\/strong> back in 2014. \u00a0Cseh, with his 200 fly win, is the first man to sweep the 100-200 fly since 1995.<\/p>\n

Cseh’s time also pushed him to the top of the world, clearing Li Zhuhao’s<\/strong> 51.24 from Chinese Nationals. \u00a0That’s Hungary’s eighth gold medal of the meet as well.<\/p>\n

Czerniak, meanwhile, placed second in 51.22 to move to second in the world rankings, while France’s Mehdy Metella<\/strong> took third overall in 51.70.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Piero Codia<\/strong> (51.82), Italy’s Matteo Rivolta<\/strong> (51.96), Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski<\/strong> (51.98), Ukraine’s Lyubomyr Lemeshko<\/strong> (52.25) and Denmark’s Viktor Bromer<\/strong> (53.00) made up the rest of the final swims.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Italy’s Federica Pellegrini<\/strong> touched out The Netherlands’ Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> for the women’s 200-meter freestyle title at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Pellegrini won the finale with a 1:55.93 to 1:55.97 triumph ahead of Heemskerk. \u00a0It wasn’t her fastest of the year, behind a 1:55.30 at Italian Nationals. \u00a0It also wasn’t the fastest 200 free here as Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> clocked a 1:55.30 meet record as a leadoff in the 800 free relay.<\/p>\n

France’s Charlotte Bonnet<\/strong> took third overall in 1:56.51, while Spain’s Melanie Costa Schmid<\/strong> picked up fourth in 1:58.08.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto<\/strong> (1:58.16), Hungary’s Ajna Kesely<\/strong> (1:58.24), Bulgaria’s Nina Rangelova<\/strong> (1:58.27) and Spain’s Patricia Castro Ortega<\/strong> (1:58.69) finished fifth through eighth in the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Fran Halsall<\/strong> charged through the meet record in the women’s 50-meter back at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Halsall blew the roof off the hometown crowd with a 27.57 for the win. \u00a0That swim cleared Aliaksandra Herasimenia’s<\/strong> meet record of 27.64 from the 2010 edition in Budapest. \u00a0It also moved her to third in the world this year behind Herasimenia (27.40) and Minna Atherton<\/strong> (27.49).<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Mie Nielsen<\/strong> placed second in 27.77 to move to fifth in the world, while Great Britain’s Georgia Davies<\/strong> captured third overall in 27.87 to make the top 10 in the world.<\/p>\n

Greece’s Theodora Drakou<\/strong> (28.00), The Netherlands’ Maaike De Waard<\/strong> (28.14), Finland’s Mimosa Jallow<\/strong> (28.15), Turkey’s Ekaterina Avramova<\/strong> (28.60) and Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina<\/strong> (28.61) also competed for the title.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> raced his way to the men’s 200-meter back at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Kawecki clocked a 1:55.98 for the win, a bit off his meet mark of 1:55.28 from a 2012 swim in Debrecen.\u00a0Kawecki moved up to fifth in the world rankings with the swim.<\/p>\n

Israel’s Yakov Toumarkin<\/strong> placed second in the finale with a time of 1:56.97, while Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys<\/strong> took third in 1:57.22.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Gabor Balog<\/strong> (1:58.66), Greece’s Apostolos Christou<\/strong> (1:58.87), Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (1:59.31), Italy’s Christopher Ciccarese<\/strong> (1:59.45) and Italy’s Luca Mencarini<\/strong> (2:02.04) also swam in the finale.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Adam Peaty<\/strong> matched his world-best semifinal time with another 26.66 in the men’s 50-meter breast finals at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Peaty proved the 26.66 wasn’t a fluke yesterday with all of the timing system issues surrounding his swim, as he matched that time clean tonight for the title.<\/p>\n

Slovenia’s Peter John Stevens<\/strong> claimed silver with a time of 27.09 to move to third in the world behind Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> (27.08).<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Ross Murdoch<\/strong> placed third in 27.31, while Lithuania’s Giedrius Titenis took fourth with a 27.46.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s Johannes Skagius<\/strong> (27.54), Slovenia’s Damir Dugonjic<\/strong> (27.56), Serbia’s Caba Siladji<\/strong> (27.72) and Italy’s Andrea Toniato<\/strong> (27.79) grabbed the rest of the finishes.<\/p>\n

Men’s 800 free relay<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Netherlands picked up another relay victory as the nation topped the men’s 800-meter free relay at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Dion Dreesens<\/strong> (1:47.92), Maarten Brzoskowski<\/strong> (1:46.55), Kyle Stolk<\/strong> (1:47.88) and Sebastiaan Verschuren<\/strong> (1:45.47) cranked out the victory in 7:07.82.<\/p>\n

Belgium’s Louis Croenen<\/strong> (1:48.47), Glenn Surgeloose<\/strong> (1:46.12), Dieter Dekoninck<\/strong> (1:47.70) and Pieter Timmers<\/strong> (1:45.99) finished second overall in a time of 7:08.28.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Mitch D’Arrigo<\/strong> (1:47.57), Filippo Magnini<\/strong> (1:47.82), Luca Dotto<\/strong> (1:47.52) and Gabriele Detti<\/strong> (1:45.39) placed third in 7:08.30.<\/p>\n

Poland (7:08.31), France (7:09.18), Great Britain (7:10.73), Hungary (7:12.99) and Israel (7:16.82) also swam in the finale.<\/p>\n

SEMIFINALS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Women’s 50 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden’s Jennie Johansson<\/strong> charged her way to the top of the women’s 50-meter breast semis at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Johansson clocked in with a time of 30.74, just off her fifth-ranked 30.71 from earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Finland’s Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> qualified second in 30.81 to move to eighth in the world, while Iceland’s Hilda Luthersdottir<\/strong> picked up the third seed in 30.83 for ninth in the world.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Mariya Liver<\/strong> (30.90), Sweden’s Sophie Hansson<\/strong> (30.95), Finland’s Veera Kivirinta<\/strong> (30.98) and Czech’s Petra Chocova<\/strong> (31.13) made it safely through to the finale.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Martina Carraro<\/strong> and Russia’s Natalia Ivaneeva<\/strong> set up a swimoff for eighth with 31.14s.\u00a0Ivaneeva downed Carraro, 30.95 to 31.00, in the swimoff.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

France’s Florent Manaudou<\/strong> dominated semis of the men’s 50-meter free at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Manaudou, already the world leader with a 21.42 at French Nationals, posted a 21.64 for the top time here in London.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Ben Proud<\/strong> qualified second in 21.84, off his third-ranked season best of 21.65. \u00a0Meanwhile, Greece’s Kristian Gkolomeev<\/strong> grabbed third overall in 21.89 to clear his ninth-ranked 21.90 from a meet in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Finland’s Ari-Pekka Liukkonen<\/strong> (21.92), Ukraine’s Andriy Govorov<\/strong> (21.92), Hungary’s Krisztian Takacs<\/strong> (22.09), Romania’s Norbert Trandafir<\/strong> (22.12) and Italy’s Luca Dotto<\/strong> (22.17) grabbed the rest of the spots into finals.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Italy’s Alessia Polieri<\/strong> turned in the top time in the women’s 200-meter fly semis at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Polieri clocked a 2:07.49 for the top time this evening, moving into the top 15 in the world.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Liliana Szilagyi<\/strong> qualified second overall in 2:08.63 with Germany’s Franziska Hentke<\/strong> posting a third-seeded 2:08.74. \u00a0Hentke is the second-fastest swimmer in the world this year with a 2:05.77 from German Nationals, so look for her to turn up the heat in finals.<\/p>\n

Spain’s Judit Ignacio Sorribes<\/strong> took fourth in 2:08.76 with Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos<\/strong> picking up the fifth seed in a time of 2:08.80.<\/p>\n

Slovenia’s Anja Klinar<\/strong> (2:09.14), Switzerland’s Martina Van Berkel<\/strong> (2:09.40), and Italy’s Stefania Pirozzi<\/strong> (2:10.11) qualified sixth through eighth in the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Fran Halsall<\/strong> clinched the top seed in the women’s 50-meter free semis after winning the 50 back shortly before at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Having already won the 50 back earlier in the evening, Halsall returned with a sizzling 24.21 for the top seed in finals. \u00a0That’s the third-best in the world behind only Cate Campbell<\/strong> (23.84) and Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> (24.17).<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> (24.37) and France’s Anna Santamans<\/strong> (24.83) qualified second and third, while Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong> took fourth overall in 24.93.<\/p>\n

Belarus’ Yuliya Khitraya<\/strong> (25.05), Sweden’s Therese Alshammar<\/strong> (25.05), Greece’s Theodora Drakou<\/strong> (25.06) and Italy’s Silvia Di Pietro<\/strong> (25.09) will also compete in the finale.<\/p>\n
