ATHENS, Georgia, February 17. FOLLOWING day one of the 2011 Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) swimming and diving championships, the Davidson men lead the respective team races Thursday in the event contested at the Gabrielson Natatorium on the campus of University of Georgia.<\/p>\n
Davidson scored 266 points in first, while College of Charleston followed in second with 232 points and ten points behind the Cougars is Gardner-Webb with 222 points. VMI (108), Howard (71) and Florida A&M (27) round out the men's field.<\/p>\n
The 200-yard freestyle relay started the evening finals off with Davidson breaking the CCSA record of 1:21.21 and making the NCAA B cut, with Bryan Droll anchoring the relay with a split of 19.60. Gardner-Webb finished in second place with a time of 1:22.29 and College of Charleston was third, clocking
\n1:23.22.<\/p>\n
In men's 3-meter diving, College of Charleston's Peter Gibbons took the crown with a score of 249.25. First seed coming into the finals, Wildcat Brian McRae took second place with a score of 209.80. Rounding out the diving field was Dallas Disbro of VMI with 165.25.<\/p>\n
College of Charleston's Matthew Sherrier swam impressive 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA "B" cut time of 4:27.80. Rounding out the top-3 was Davidson's Curtis Chaney (4:32.69) and Gardner-Webb's Sam Wilson (4:38.35). <\/p>\n
Davidson's Peitz and Onken finished 1-2 in the 200 IM, with Peitz clocked 1:47.53 and Onken 1:48.16, both NCAA B cut times. The Runnin' Bulldogs Steven Caudill swam 1:50.78, good for third place. <\/p>\n
The Wildcats continued their success on the day with Bryan Droll taking first in the 50 free with a time of 20.46 and Willis Cooper placing third, clocking 20.94. Cougar Greg Karel finished between the two Wildcats in second with a time of 20.89. <\/p>\n
Davidson took the lead at end the day by demolishing the CCSA record with a time of 3:16.68 and racing for an NCAA B standard. The Runnin' Bulldogs came in second in the relay with a time of 3:20.12, while the College of Charleston placed third with a time of 3:22.25.<\/p>\n
In the preliminaries, Davidson's Drew Onken and Geoffrey Peitz had two swimmers make the NCAA B-cut with times of 1:48.44 and 1:48.74, respectively. <\/p>\n
The second day of the CCSA Championship will begin Friday, Feb. 18 at 10:00am, starting with the 200 yard medley "B" relays. The finals will take start at 6:00pm.<\/p>\n
