Men’s 1500 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong> challenged Sun Yang’s<\/strong> world record in the men’s 1500-meter free at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Paltrinieri, who was under world record pace from 1100-1400 meters, wound up with the second fastest 1500 free of all time in 14:34.04.<\/p>\n

That’s behind only Sun’s time of 14:31.02 set at the 2012 London Olympics. \u00a0That’s the two fastest swims in the event’s history in the same location now.<\/p>\n

Paltrinieri crushed his former European record of 14:39.67 set at the 2015 World Championships last summer. \u00a0He also blasted the previous top-ranked time in the world this year of 14:39.54 held by Mack Horton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Teammate Gabriele Detti<\/strong> took second overall in 14:48.75, while Ukraine’s Mykhaylo Romanchuk<\/strong> finished third in 14:50.33.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Sebastiaan Verschuren<\/strong> raced right by Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic<\/strong> down the stretch to win the men’s 200-meter free at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Verschuren picked up the victory in a time of 1:46.02, slower than his sixth-ranked season best of 1:45.87 from earlier in the meet.<\/p>\n

Stjepanovic finished second overall in 1:46.26, off his seventh-ranked season best of 1:46.04 from earlier in the meet as well.<\/p>\n

James Guy<\/strong> of Great Britain, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 1:45.19 from British Nationals who is swimming through this meet with a focus on the 2016 Rio Olympics, took third in 1:46.42.<\/p>\n

Finland’s Matias Koski<\/strong> (1:46.98), Belgium’s Glenn Surgeloose<\/strong> (1:47.05), Poland’s Kacper Majchrzak<\/strong> (1:47.45), The Netherlands’ Maarten Brzoskowski<\/strong> (1:47.85) and Italy’s Mitch D’Arrigo<\/strong> (1:48.05) also swam for the title.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>, the world-record holder in the event, posted a smooth victory in the women’s 100-meter breast at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Meilutyte won the finale in a time of 1:06.17, just off her meet record of 1:06.16 set earlier in the meet, and well off her third-ranked season best of 1:05.82 from the Edinburgh International meet.<\/p>\n

Iceland’s Hilda Luthersdottir<\/strong> raced her way to second overall in 1:06.45 to move to eighth in the world rankings. \u00a0Great Britain’s Chloe Tutton<\/strong> picked up bronze in a time of 1:07.50.<\/p>\n

Ireland’s Fiona Doyle<\/strong> (1:07.76), Italy’s Martina Carraro<\/strong> (1:07.81), Turkey’s Viktoria Zeynep Gunes<\/strong> (1:07.83), Great Britain’s Molly Renshaw<\/strong> (1:07.93) and Sweden’s Sophie Hansson<\/strong> (1:07.99) rounded out the championship swimmers.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> eased her way to the women’s 100-meter freestyle title at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom clocked a time of 52.82, off her meet record of 52.67 from the 2014 edition of the meet . The swim is slower than her third-ranked season best of 52.78 from the Swedish Open.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom could be keeping her powder dry for the 2016 Rio Olympics as she tries to contend with the Campbell Sisters in Australia.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> (53.24) and Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> (53.72) took second and third overall in the finale.<\/p>\n

France’s Charlotte Bonnet<\/strong> (54.01), Israel’s Andrea Murez<\/strong> (54.89), Bulgaria’s Nina Rangelova<\/strong> (54.96), Italy’s Silvia Di Pietro<\/strong> (55.11) and Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto<\/strong> (56.52) finished fourth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Greece’s Andreas Vazaios<\/strong> picked up the men’s 200-meter IM title at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Vazaios turned in a top time of 1:58.18 for the win, moving up to ninth in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Israel’s Gal Nevo<\/strong> took second overall in a time of 1:59.69 with Portugal’s Alexis Santos<\/strong> rounding out the podium with a third-place time of 1:59.76.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Federico Turrini<\/strong> (2:00.28), Portugal’s Diogo Carvalho<\/strong> (2:00.29), Luxembourg’s Raphael Stacchiotti<\/strong> (2:00.56), Great Britain’s Max Litchfield<\/strong> (2:00.71) and Great Britain’s Dan Wallace<\/strong> (2:00.92) also competed for the gold.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Ross Murdoch<\/strong> paced semis in the men’s 200-meter breast at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Murdoch hit the wall in a time of 2:09.72, just off his seventh-ranked season best of 2:09.16 from British Nationals.<\/p>\n

Germany’s Marco Koch<\/strong>, the top-ranked swimmer in the world with a 2:07.69 from the Euro Meet, took second in semis with a 2:09.82.<\/p>\n

Finland’s Matti Mattsson<\/strong> (2:10.10), Iceland’s Anton McKee<\/strong> (2:10.91), Sweden’s Erik Persson<\/strong> (2:11.22), Greece’s Panagiotis Samilidis<\/strong> (2:11.22), Russia’s Mikhail Dorinov<\/strong> (2:11.25) and Italy’s Luca Pizzini<\/strong> (2:11.54) also made the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>, who has been on a roll this week with multiple golds already, cruised to the top seed in the women’s 200-meter IM semis at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Hosszu clocked a time of 2:08.60, off her top-ranked time of 2:07.69 from the Golden Tour this year.<\/p>\n

That’s still faster than anyone else has gone this year as Viktoriya Andreeva<\/strong> holds the second-ranked swim with a 2:09.56 at Russian Nationals.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor<\/strong> cranked out a second-seeded time of 2:10.17, off her third-ranked best of 2:09.66. \u00a0Great Britain’s Hannah Miley<\/strong> churned out a third-seeded 2:12.39.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Evelyn Verraszto<\/strong> (2:12.93), Italy’s Sara Franceschi<\/strong> (2:12.95), Switzerland’s Maria Ugolkova<\/strong> (2:13.34), Italy’s Carlotta Toni<\/strong> (2:13.92) and The Netherlands’ Wendy van der Zanden<\/strong> (2:14.18) also made the championship eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> took down the meet record in the men’s 200-meter fly at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Cseh clocked a time of 1:54.29, clearing the previous mark of 1:54.38 set by Poland’s Pawel Korzeniowski<\/strong> back in 2008 in Eindhoven. \u00a0That swim is better than Cseh’s previous third-ranked season-best time of 1:54.51 from prelims. \u00a0Only Daiya Seto<\/strong> (1:54.14) and Masato Sakai<\/strong> (1:54.21) have been faster.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Viktor Bromer<\/strong> turned in a second-seeded time with a 1:55.28 to move to sixth in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi<\/strong>, already ranked fourth in the world with a 1:54.79 from prelims, posted a 1:56.02 for the third seed.<\/p>\n

Poland’s Jan Switkowski<\/strong> (1:56.67), Italy’s Giacomo Carini<\/strong> (1:56.81), Spain’s Carlos Peralta Gallego<\/strong> (1:56.92), Greece’s Stefanos Dimitriadis<\/strong> (1:57.44) and Belgium’s Louis Croenen<\/strong> (1:57.56) closed out the rest of the finalist field.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Denmark’s Mie Nielsen<\/strong> took down her own meet record in the women’s 100-meter back during semis at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Nielsen clocked a swift time of 59.16 for the top seed, well under her 59.26 from prelims. \u00a0That tied for her third-ranked season best from the Edinburgh International.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> also cleared 1:00 with a 59.83 to move into 13th in the world.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> eased through semis with a third-seeded time of 1:00.03. \u00a0She has a 59.38 to her credit this year from prelims.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina<\/strong> (1:00.31), Iceland’s Eyglo Gustafsdottir<\/strong> (1:00.46), Turkey’s Ekaterina Avramova<\/strong> (1:00.52), Great Britain’s Georgia Davies<\/strong> (1:00.58) and Italy’s Carlotta Zofkova<\/strong> (1:00.81) also made finals.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

France’s Camille Lacourt<\/strong>, already the top-ranked swimmer in the world in the men’s 50-meter back, led semis at the 2016 European Championships.<\/p>\n

Lacourt, who has a 24.67 to his credit from the Golden Tour, topped qualifying in a 24.79 to head into finals the favorite.<\/p>\n

Poland’s Tomasz Polewka<\/strong> checked in second with a time of 24.87 to move to sixth in the world rankings. \u00a0Romania’s Robert Glinta<\/strong> qualified third in 24.97 for ninth in the world.<\/p>\n

Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (25.02), Hungary’s Richard Bohus<\/strong> (25.04), Russia’s Nikita Ulyanov<\/strong> (25.06), Israel’s Guy Barnea<\/strong> (25.09) and Israel’s Jonatan Kopelev<\/strong> (25.20) earned the rest of the spots in finals.<\/p>\n
