Men’s 400 free<\/strong><\/p>\n

Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic<\/strong> led the way this morning in the men’s 400-meter free preliminary events. He topped qualifying in a time of 3:46.72 to move to 10th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Peter Bernek<\/strong> raced his way to second this morning with a 3:47.05, while Italy’s Gabriele Detti<\/strong> took third in 3:47.18. \u00a0Detti is ranked third in the world with a 3:43.97.<\/p>\n

In a stunner, James Guy<\/strong> of Great Britain, the second-ranked swimmer in the world with a 3:43.84 from British Championships, finished 27th overall in 3:52.91 to miss finals completely.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’ Maarten Brzoskowski<\/strong> (4:37.63), Austria’s Felix Auboeck<\/strong> (3:47.92), Norway’s Henrik Christiansen<\/strong> (3:48.33), Great Britain’s Stephen Milne<\/strong> (3:48.43) and Poland’s Filip Zaborowski<\/strong> (3:48.43) also made the finale.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>, the world record holder with a 24.43 to her credit from 2014, put herself in a good spot heading into semis with a 25.59 this morning. \u00a0Sjostrom is the only person that’s been faster this year with a 25.15 from the Swedish Open.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen<\/strong> matched her fourth-ranked season best of 25.80 for the second seed, while The Netherlands’ Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> snared third in 25.80 as well.<\/p>\n

Fran Halsall<\/strong> (26.01), Therese Alshammar<\/strong> (26.05), Maaike De Waard<\/strong> (26.32), Nastja Govejsek <\/strong>(26.36) and Melanie Henique<\/strong> (26.38) also made the top eight of the top 16 semifinalists.<\/p>\n

All qualifiers and alternates are listed below. \u00a0Kim Busch<\/strong> of The Netherlands, however, missed out on semis due to the two-per-country rule. \u00a0With Kromowidjojo and De Waard already qualifying ahead of her, Busch’s 15th-place 26.66 left her outside of a finales swim.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Romania’s Robert Glinta<\/strong> was one of two 53s this morning with a leading time of 53.43. \u00a0That swim put him into 12th in the world rankings.<\/p>\n

Greece’s Apostolos Christou<\/strong> hit the wall second overall in 53.77 with Ireland’s Shane Ryan<\/strong> taking the Irish national record with a third-placed 54.21 out of prelims.<\/p>\n

Israel’s Yakov Toumarkin<\/strong> (54.22), Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (54.31), Italy’s Simone Sabbioni<\/strong> (54.54), Poland’s Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> (54.63) and Israel’s Guy Barnea<\/strong> (54.81) claimed the rest of the top 8 spots heading into semis.<\/p>\n

Israel’s depth in the event was on display with two potential top 16 swimmers missing out on second swims due to the two-per country rule. \u00a0David Gamburg<\/strong> (55.14) and Jonatan Kopelev<\/strong> (55.15) finished 14th and 16th this morning, but were booted from semis.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Hungary’s David Foldhazi<\/strong> and Adam Telegdy<\/strong> set up a swimoff for the final spot with 55.37s.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> broke her own meet record in the women’s 400-meter IM at the 2016 European Championships during prelims.<\/p>\n

Hosszu clocked a top time of 4:30.97 in prelims, breaking her old mark of 4:31.03 set in Berlin in 2014.<\/p>\n

That’s not Hosszu’s best this year, she’s already clocked a European record 4:29.89 on the French Golden Tour, and will be looking to challenge Ye Shiwen’s<\/strong> world record of 4:28.43 during finals.<\/p>\n

Aimee Willmott<\/strong> qualified second in 4:37.49, while Hannah Miley<\/strong> took third in 4:38.91 for Great Britain as well.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Zsuzsanna Jakabos<\/strong> (4:39.10), Italy’s Carlotta Toni<\/strong> (4:39.60), Slovenia’s Anja Klinar<\/strong> (4:41.31), Czech’s Barbora Zavadova<\/strong> (4:41.63) and Italy’s Luisa Trombetti<\/strong> (4:41.87) also earned their way into the championship heat.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 breast<\/strong><\/p>\n

World-record holder Adam Peaty<\/strong> rang up another 58-second performance in the men’s 100-meter breast.<\/p>\n

Peaty topped qualifying with a time of 58.94, just off his meet record of 58.68 from the 2014 edition of the meet. Peaty has been faster than both this year with a 58.41 at British Nationals.<\/p>\n

Ross Murdoch<\/strong> came in with a second-seeded time of 59.91, off his third-ranked 59.31 from British Nationals as well.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s breaststroke depth was definitely demonstrated as Craig Benson’s<\/strong> sixth place time of 1:00.63 left him out of semis. \u00a0Additionally, Charlie Attwood’s<\/strong> 16th-place 1:01.56 also missed out.<\/p>\n

Lithuania’s Giedrius Titenis<\/strong> (59.95), Slovenia’s Damir Dugonjic<\/strong> (1:00.33), Italy’s Andrea Toniato<\/strong> (1:00.41), Iceland’s Anton McKee<\/strong> (1:00.79), Greece’s Panagiotis Samilidis<\/strong> (1:00.86) and Italy’s Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong> (1:01.13) also made up the top half of the semifinalist field.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 back<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the back of her meet record in the 400 IM, Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> returned in the 200 back for the top seed.<\/p>\n

Hosszu posted a top time of 2:08.44, off her fifth-ranked season best of 2:07.36 from the Golden Tour. Hosszu could be looking at a meet record in the event. \u00a0She’d have to take down Krisztina Egerszegi’s<\/strong> time of 2:06.62 from way back in 1991.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Daryna Zevina<\/strong> hit the wall second overall in a time of 2:09.90 with Turkey’s Ekaterina Avramova<\/strong> qualifying third in 2:11.21.<\/p>\n

Croatia’s Matea Samardzic<\/strong> (2:11.25), Iceland’s Eyglo Gustafsdottir<\/strong> (2:11.30), Italy’s Margherita Panziera<\/strong> (2:11.45), Czech’s Simona Baumrtova<\/strong> (2:11.92) and Hungary’s Kata Burian<\/strong> (2:11.92) also made semis.<\/p>\n
