SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 7. JUNIOR Megan Land won a pair of individual events to lead the Rice University swim team to an easy 189-104 dual meet victory over the University of the Incarnate Word Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.<\/p>\n
Rice won 11 of the meet's 14 swim events at the Barshop Natatorium on the UIW campus, including two by Megan Land. The Owls' sprinter from Cumming, Ga., swam a career-best 1:00.46 to lead a 1-2 Rice finish with junior Justine Lin in the 100-yard backstroke. Land later led an Owl sweep of the 100-butterfly with a season-best time of 59.19 as Rice claimed each of the event's top four spots.<\/p>\n
Senior Diane Gu also provided a scoring punch as the Blue & Gray won its seventh dual meet of the year. Gu led a 1-2-3 Rice finish in the 50-freestyle and the Orlando, Fla., native swam the anchor leg on two winning relay races.<\/p>\n
Junior Anglea Wo swam a season-best 2:10.59 to win the 200-individual medley as the Owls claimed each of the top three spots. Rice also had a 1-2-3 finish from Alexandra Ernst, Caitlin Warner and Kait Chura, respectively, in the 200-butterfly.<\/p>\n
Freshman Shelby Bottoms won the 500-freestyle (5:06.57) in her first time to race in the event at the collegiate level. Sophomore Ashten Ackerman was second in the same event (5:11.03) in her debut at the distance.<\/p>\n
The veteran tandem of Justine Lin (2:07.74) and senior Jennifer Hill (2:09.15) went 1-2 in the 200-backstroke with a pair of season-best marks. Erin Mattson and Nicole Delaloye claimed the top two spots, respectively, in the 200-freestyle. Freshman Alex O'Brien won the 200-breaststroke to round-out the busy day of Owl victories. The Rice swim team is next in action at the annual Conference USA Championships on Feb. 25-28. The championship meet, featuring every C-USA swim team, will be held across town at the University of Houston Campus & Recreation Wellness Center Natatorium. <\/p>\n
